When I see little seedlings of native trees along our fence lines that are in danger of getting mowed or cut by the county, I attempt to relocate them to a safe area on our land.
This is an incense cedar (Calocedrus decurrens), which is the second most common, native coniferous tree (behind the Douglas fir) within a 10 kilometer radius of us.
I think that as the climate continues drying out and heating up in the Upper Willamette Valley, this is an ideal tree to be planting for wooded areas along the edges of our valleys. As you can see on the map below (from Wikipedia), we are on the northern edge of its current range.
To me, the only downside of this species is that it grows VERY slowly. By the time it's as tall as I am, I'll be sporting adult diapers. That's okay, though. I'm playing the long game.
