Looking down on a patch of Hens and Chicks, a plant that is considered a succulent. The plant is a combination of larger green rosettes with a center that unfolds creating more layers. They are surrounded by smaller rosettes, that resemble Brussels sprouts. At this time of the year, most of the individual plants are tinged with pale red, signifying spring growth.

It will soon be time for my cacti to burst into flower. Some are starting already. These from previous years.

Mammillaria carmenae: a clumping cactus with quite dense golden-brown spines through which the green body can be glimpsed. It has many flowers with lots of white petals arranged in a circle and pale yellow stamens and stigma. A few flower buds are showing too.

Looking straight down at a bunch of bright, neon green plants. They are circular with guitar pick shaped leaves that open like a rose but resemble cacti more than a lush green plant. Next to all of them are much smaller marble sized offshoots that can be moved about on the soil before they begin to flourish like the larger ones.

Today in the greenhouse...

Lophophora williamsii, known as peyote, native to southern North America, particularly the Chihuahuan Desert. So unusual for three flowers to appear at once and this is the smallest of my peyote plants. The flowers will probably be followed by pink seedpods and black seeds, though I've never tried growing this species from seed.
