Some top newsletter writers — including Anne Helen Petersen, Lyz Lenz, and Virginia Sole-Smith — have left Substack for Patreon. Email delivery issues, poor technical support and an overemphasis on social features were reasons for their departure. There is a Fediverse alternative to #Substack called #Ghost.
Ghost is now compatible with the Fediverse. It's not just a feed, Ghost-powered sites can take part in discussions with Mastodon etc accounts, the follows work in both directions etc.

Has about 50 million users worldwide.
Substack takes about 10% of the revenue the newsletters make. About 5 million people pay for access to newsletters on its platform.

It honestly is infinitely all kinds of sad that I syndicate my blog posts to Facebook, no external link, and everyone eats it up, but if I send someone a link to my website via SMS or something, I get, "Do you publish these on Facebook? Can I just read you on Facebook or Substack? I don't get why you made your own website. Strange."
I get it that my layout isn't for everybody but that's why I don't block reader mode. That's why I have full text RSS. I give *you* the choice but this only seems to alien people *more* not less.
