Now I am curious, what's our #Filipino word for #Fediverse and #SocialWeb ?

So far, I these for potential Filipino translation of "Fediverse":

- bigkisberso (bigkis + uniberso)
- sansinukob = used in Filipino astronomy and literature to refer to the "universe" (I personally like this one)
- bukob (buklod + sukob) = just my invention

Other suggestions?

Since we're talking about the Filipino language (not Tagalog language), this means all Philippine languages are valid. We can combine them together, even use the 6th vowel /ë/.

But how about "Social Web"?

I was told that the Filipino for "Internet" is "daigbatan". I'm just not sure though since I can't find information on "batan" other than:

- Original name of Bataän was Batan, a Spanish word for "log" (🪵) which the province was named after by the Spaniards.
- The Ivatan people call themselves in the Ivatan language as "Batan". (Yes, Batanes = Isles of [the] Batan [people]. Batan + Isles (just my theory, but it makes logical sense 😝))

So, I'm not sure why "Internet" is "daigbatan".

My thought process is, "social web" could be:
- liponbatan = literally social network
- daiglipon = lit. world social; web social

Other suggestions?

@pilipinas @philippines @pilipinas@lemmy.ml @pinoy @pinoy@a.gup.pe #Philippines #Pilipinas #Pilipino #Filipino #Filipinas

Thread split from https://c.im/@youronlyone/114687547471682757

Something to SNS providers and software can learn from the gaming industry is name filters.

Majority, if not all, online #games implement a RegExp-based or manual input name blocklist. In the socmed landscape, software like Mastodon should implement it to prevent any handles **and** display names with "Mastodon" in it.

Instance admins and moderators should be able to add new entries as they see fit. They can choose between RegExp matching or manual input.

It is an effective way to minimize fake accounts pretending to be the platform, instance, service, and/or software. For example, the Mastodon **software** is currently being bombarded by fake accounts about "Mastodon account verification", with "Mastodon" in either their handle or display name, or both.

Other social media software and platforms should implement it as well. Of course, it is not the ultimate solution, but it at least adds another layer to enable admins and moderators to fight against scammers and phishers pretending to be official accounts or channels.

Tags: #SNS #SocMed #SocialMedia #Mastodon #SocialWeb #OpenSocial #Fediverse #Bluesky #ATmosphere #Moderation

I’m going to be participating in the Growing the Open Social Web workshop at Fediforum on March 3, 2026. I’m excited to talk to other people who care about the Fediverse about ways to connect more people through ActivityPub.

Fediforum invited attendees to publish position papers before the workshop. SWF has a number of hypotheses about growth of the social web; I’ll try to summarise some of them here.

Growth can’t come at the expense of privacy. People currently on the Fediverse must have the tools they need to preserve their privacy as the network grows. This means privacy from other users, as well as privacy from new platform operators. Expanding the options for private interactions on the Fediverse, like end-to-end encrypted messages and private groups, is necessary for preserving privacy as the user base and platform list expands.
Connecting platforms to the Fediverse is our most efficient way to grow. There are already billions of people on social platforms across the Internet. Getting these platforms to let users publish to the Fediverse, as well as having two-way interactions with remote users, lets people share in the benefits of the Fediverse with a platform and interface that they’re already used to. Even when brand new social platforms adopt ActivityPub, they bring their new features and users.
Connecting communities helps us grow fast and stay cohesive. Bringing formal and informal communities onto the Fediverse is a great way to enable a lot of new users quickly. By formal communities, we mean organized groups like clubs, universities and schools, professional societies, enterprises, or local and regional governments. These groups can set up their own places on the Fediverse, like Mastodon servers, and provide user accounts for all their members. (One great way to connect formal communities is to Fediverse-enable the community platforms they already use.) These new Fediverse users have the kind of connections in place that retain active users, as well as the support they need to use the Fediverse. More informal communities, like people sharing the same profession, fans of a particular hobby, or users of a language or technology, can be great additions to the Fediverse, but these groups are less cohesive and less likely to bring their own infrastructure.
People come to social networks for existing social ties. Bringing on new users one-by-one is the most difficult way to grow this network. The best way to engage new users on the network, and to keep them active and interested, is to make sure they can connect to people they already know and care about. That may be friends, family, colleagues and neighbours, or brands, creators, and publications they recognise. Our onboarding processes for Fediverse users need to encourage the social contacts so that people feel a reason to stick around for day 2, 7, and 30.

We’re looking forward to engaging with the Fediforum community on these and other topics. We’ll see you on March 3!

In gaming, it is common for spammers to report legit accounts if they echoed back their own spam. We suspend them first to minimize the spam, go back to review it, and issue warnings if needed.

It's the same in social media. Please refrain from echoing or "revenge spamming" a spammer. The spammers—and potentially non-spammers—will report you for spamming.

We then have to suspend your account to avoid further spams, and then go back later to review if you are indeed a spammer or engaging in "revenge spamming".

- It is a hassle for you.
- It will be stressful once you receive a suspension email.
- It is also increasing our workload.
- It will paint your instance/community as "bad" or lacking moderation.

The only ones enjoying it are the spammers. They know they'll get banned so they wreak havoc by confusing and stressing everyone.

---

I just so happen to be the type of moderator/GM in social media and the gaming industry who is reasonable, and takes the time to actually investigate. At least half in my line-of-work—voluntary or paid—are by-the-book. No investigation. If there's evidence = ban hammer. Forget the context.

So, please do not engage in "revenge spamming". Report the spammers and add them to your ignore list. We will get to your reports as soon as possible and suspend their accounts.

Thank you very much for your understanding and cooperation.

---

I believe I can say this is on behalf of all modertaors, admins, GMs, employees, and volunteers. 🖖🏽

Tags: #moderation #Fediverse #socmed #SocialMedia #SNS #SocialWeb #OpenSocial

I fight for decentralized social media cause I believe that the current structure of our info ecosystem allows capitalism to corrupt democracy. That people cannot properly advocate for themselves in the political arena cause they are biased by the ability of the wealthy to influence what info and views receive mass attention. That until the public has collective control over what they think about, only the interests of the wealthy will be best served.

#SocialWeb #DemocracyOfReach

cc @fediforum
