Further down the thread: "I emailed and met with the editorial office to ask for the AI assistant to be turned off. I was told this is not possible. Instead, I was treated to some vague promises of potential future improvements and a dose of gaslighting."
Of course the AI assistant could be turned off (the editor knows this; I am not criticizing him, simply emphasizing a point). Whoever pulls the strings doesn't want it turned off, and so it will not be.
The future this is trending towards is AI-generated "articles" about "science" "conducted" by AI, "reviewed" by AI, "directed" by AI "editorial" systems. It seems the entire system would have no human beings in it. Why, exactly, would we want to build such a system? What would it be for?
