Introduction Appendix 3: This project will be a bit less socially minded, more just creative, and hopefully even a little lucrative, but I'm not holding my breath.

That's right, I'm writing a novel. I know that novelists are a dime a dozen, but I actually really enjoy writing, think that I'm fairly decent at it, and certainly have no shortage of ideas. There will be sequels, many of them (and prequels, and side stories...).

So what's it about? It's science fiction, because that's what I know and like best. The basic idea is the well-known "lost in space" idea, but I'm hoping that the unique setting, characters, and story are able to carry it. It takes place in an alternate history where the United States, Canada, and Mexico joined together to form a Technate, a country that employs Technocracy (see my Intro Appendix 1), not long after World War 2. Technological progress happens much faster until the start of the novel, where we find our crew of four performing a test flight of a prototype fusion rocket engine. Naturally, something goes horribly wrong and... science fiction weirdness ensues as the crew has to try and find their way back to Earth while navigating several strange (and often hostile) alien civilizations.

The background and setting are fairly detailed, enough that I already have ideas for prequels and side stories in addition to the main series. "Epic" world building appears to be my jam. Now we just have to see if anyone else happens to like it.

I've finished: A Door Into Ocean by Joan Slonczewski

If you want to read a book from the 80s that isn't horribly outdated, your best bet is to seek a female author.

A Door Into Ocean is about non violent resistance to an imperialist patriarchy. About the dangers of deadly technology to humanity and the environment. About a path to a society that will not destroy itself.

It pits a women lead planet that has learned to live in balance with nature and is governed through consensus against a men lead planet that is governed by a hierarchy and the threat of force.

The far future setting and restrictions on technology create a clean break from current trends and help prevent the novel from dating itself. Though the fear of nuclear war is a major aspect of this universe.

The complexity of the Sharer culture, it's language and philosophy and the powerful will of the women that make up it's collective are very compelling.

I appreciate that Slonczewski gives us two main points of view, that of a mature noble woman and of a young commoner man. This allows us to experience migration to Shora at two different levels, (and we don't have to spend all of our time with a stupid teenager).

I've finished: Calypso by Oliver K. Langmead

This is a generation colony ship sci-fi novel.

One of the first scenes introduces a Terra-formed Mars. The technological hurdles have been solved. Overcoming technical issues inherent in such a grand project is not the subject of this novel.

It is not nature but human nature Calypso struggles with.

What form should such a colony take? What toll will such a project take on its crew?

Calypso is also a literary experiment, giving different view point characters different literary styles. Including a view point written entirely in verse. I enjoyed this aspect and applaud the audiobook Producers for using distinct narrators for the different viewpoints.
