Giant planets need enormous amounts of gas to form their thick atmospheres—but the disks surrounding young stars are steadily losing that raw material.
New JWST observations of 72 young planetary systems reveal how the winds stripping away that gas change as systems age, giving astronomers a new look at the clock governing planet formation.
SETI Institute scientist Uma Gorti co-authored the study.
