"Time has a tendency to switch around. It’s as cunning as a fox, and it can be malicious. It can flow in one direction and simultaneously in the opposite one. We only think it’s always flowing along with us, and that our life sets its boundaries. Nothing could be further from the truth. It pulls us where it will. Backwards, to when we didn’t yet exist, and forwards to where we’ll no longer be there. It plays with us, fully aware that there’s nothing we can do about it. It’s not hard to play with human beings." -- from 'Needle's Eye' by Wiesław Myśliwski; trans. Bill Johnston

But technically free wifi can mean free books in places where no other free books are available 🤔
It always surprises me how many places there are to read for free online! 😊

The Testaments. By Margaret Atwood.
You are a teen girl, living in Canada after the Christo-fascist takeover of the US, when you learn that your true identity is that of a famously “abducted” US baby; and so you are thrust into a role you never asked for, and have to understand anew what ‘family’ means.

After less than a month on Threads, I finally got banned.
Permanently, with no right to appeal.
I genuinely don’t understand what for - just occasional posts about books and writers, same as here and across nine other social networks.
Their AI could not even explain the exact reason, only vague generic wording… so I can only assume my IQ was slightly above what the platform is built to tolerate.

Today is Harper Lee’s 100th birthday.
Born in a small town in Alabama, where her father worked as a lawyer, Lee loved #books. One of her childhood friends was Truman Capote, who spent time in #Monroeville as a boy. Years later, she turned the world she knew into a novel about the difficult bravery of doing what is right when the world refuses to do so.
Do you like her novel To Kill a Mockingbird?

Things That Keep Me From Reading: https://lydiaschoch.com/top-ten-tuesday-things-that-keep-me-from-reading/
Just been catching up on the #WomensPrize for Fiction 2026 longlist and for the first time ever I’ve actually already read 2 of the books - Heart the Lover by Lilly King which I enjoyed very much but didn’t love, and Audition by Katie Kitamura which I was perplexed by but also found to be a brilliant read that readers interpret in many ways. Looking forward to reading some more from this year’s list!

Joseph Heller (May 1, 1923– December 12,1999)
Before writing Catch-22, Joseph Heller served as a bombardier in World War II and flew 60 combat missions over France and Italy.
That experience became the seed of one of the most famous anti-war novels of the 20th century - a book where war is shown not as noble glory, but as a terrifying system of fear, paperwork, commands, and absurd rules.

Here are a few thoughts on Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont, 1971, by Elizabeth Taylor, a book I loved! Patrick Süskind’s Perfume is about a gifted boy and a cruel world. It offers a glimpse of French history, the perfume industry, and, most of all, the strange, intoxicating universe of scents: streets, flowers, human bodies, and even feelings.
This is a novel you can almost smell.
