A pack horse librarian delivering books in rural Kentucky in 1938. During the Great Depression, the Pack Horse Library Project was a Works Progress Administration (WPA) program in which the librarians, who were often called "book women" or "book ladies," delivered books to remote parts of Appalachia.

How many people alive today have read "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair? Less than 1%, probably.
How many people have seen "Our Daily Bread" from 1934, or similarly subversive movies? Less than 1%, probably.
How many people have read "A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn? Less than 1%, probably.
Almost everyone is traveling blind.
The education we receive and the cultural literacy we are allowed has been carefully crafted and controlled to serve the interests of our capitalist masters.
"The pile beside my bed never shrinks; at the bottom of the stack are books I've been planning to crack open for months. My shelves remain full of lingering aspirations," writes the Walrus's Michelle Cyca. She looks at the problem of unread books, and the difficulty in offloading our libraries. What do you do with your unwanted books?

I sometimes thought my father thought he could't die while he still had books on his pending pile (a stab at immortality I seem to be replicating)... so, it was strangely touching to see Tom Gauld has had similar thoughts.

Not bad for a guy who couldn’t make proper tea.
(看到的时候我内心吐槽道 Not bad for a guy who tried to mansplain what’s proper tea.

What counts as reading?
In my post, I reflect on my relationship with reading and reading contests to think through how gamification influences what we count as real reading, among many other factors.
