"Internet Privacy Is Now A Defense And The Other Side Has The Ball"
There's a whole group of privacy advocates who debate the best ways to keep themselves 'protected' on the Internet. Here's my warning.
You can lock down your private interactions with the internet and reduce your exposure to bad actors, but you have zero control over companies who have collected your most personal information.

Chrome now wants to store and autofill your driver’s license and other ID info.
From a cybersecurity perspective, that is a hard no from me. Info-stealer malware already targets browser autofill, and you cannot rotate a driver’s license number like a password. Putting high value IDs in the most targeted consumer app on the planet is a bad trade for a little convenience.

Have I been living under a rock, or are these guys genuinely unknown? Their offering seems great.
@GrapheneOS is being threatened by French authorities for refusing to add backdoors and they're dealing with coordinated attacks in French media right now. They're pulling out of France entirely, moving all their servers, and fighting off a wave of bullshit one-sided reporting that makes them look like they're helping criminals.
They need us to fight back. Support them however you can, whether that's a dollar, sharing their story, pushing back on the garbage news coverage when you see it, or just telling someone you know about what's happening. All of it matters because they're drowning in attacks from governments and media and bad actors who want them gone.
This is the only Android OS that actually makes me feel like privacy isn't just marketing. They fight for us now they need us to fight for them.
The EU is pushing Chat Control and creating an environment where governments feel empowered to threaten developers into compliance, and if we stay quiet we're letting it happen. Show up for them in whatever way you're able to.

The rise of Mastodon has made me so much more aware of government services requiring us to use private companies’ systems to communicate with them and access services.
Sitting on a Dutch train just now I was shown on a screen “feeling unsafe in the train? Contact us via WhatsApp”.
What if I don’t use WhatsApp? (I do, but I wish I didn’t have to) I’m forced to share my data with Meta to use it.
Public systems should not require use of private services.
