So, I know about myself, that I could turn vigilante pretty easily. When faced with horrific crimes, I can easily imagine myself climbing on my chaotic good paladin horse and riding off to commit justice. I tell you that story so I can tell you this one: I viscerally understand the desire for the death penalty, but as an ethicist I can say with full conviction, that we, as a country, must not allow any more death sentences.

We have incompetent people all the way up and down the Justice system. There is no real justice in American law, and as such, we cannot allow the State to murder in our name. Or attempt murder, in this case.
