French philosopher, an influential early socialist thinker, and one of the founders of utopian socialism Charles Fourier was born #OTD in 1772.

He developed a comprehensive system of societal organization known as Fourierism which influenced many writers and thinkers such as Dostoevsky, André Breton, Walter Benjamin, Herbert Marcuse and many others. He is is credited with having originated the word feminism in 1837.

American philosopher, sociologist, and psychologist George Herbert Mead died #OTD in 1931.

Austrian Philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein was born #OTD in 1899.

In Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, he attempted to delineate the limits of language. The book is structured around a series of numbered propositions and sub-propositions, which build on each other to create a dense, almost mathematical argument. Venetian scholar Elena Cornaro Piscopia was born #OTD in 1646.

She was the first woman in the world to receive a doctoral degree. On June 25, 1678, Elena became the first woman to be awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree. Her doctoral examination was held in the cathedral of Padua to accommodate the large audience, including prominent scholars and nobles. The next female doctorate was granted by the University of Bologna in 1732 to Laura Bassi.

Italian philosopher, rhetorician, historian, & jurist Giambattista Vico was born #OTD in 1668.

The Latin aphorism Verum esse ipsum factum ("Ciò che è vero è precisamente ciò che è fatto") coined by Vico represented an early example of constructivist epistemology.
