This week I've been mainly reading, no. 244.

Richard Verdi's new Thames & Hudson World of Art volume on Velázquez (2023), is great on the art, presenting a chronological discussion of most of the painter's works, but much much weaker on the life & organisation of his studio. So, if you want to assess Velázquez oeuvre then this is the book for you, but if you like artists' biographies then give Verdi's well written but tightly focussed volume a miss.

This oil-on-canvas painting depicts Turner at about 23 – 24 years old, in a three-quarter, half-length view.

His face and upper body are brightly illuminated, emerging from a featureless brown background.

Turner portrays himself as a prosperous Georgian gentleman: a dark coat with the collar turned up, layered waistcoats (one silver, one blue), a crisp white shirt, and a tied cravat.

It wasn't going anywhere, the mountain.

No matter what you said to it, no matter what names you called it, what slurs you cast upon it, it did not bow down, droop its head, slink away, acquiesce in your opinion.

It just remained: strong, determined, immovable.
