Discovering that I have hip dysplasia, possibly an underlying cause/factor in all of my “back” issues, has caused me to reflect a bit on my physical state over the years.
A lot of autistic people have sensory issues, being overly sensitive in various ways to various stimuli.
My gross motor skills were poor as a child, the result being that I was uncoordinated and had poor hand eye coordination. Obviously hip dysplasia wouldn’t have helped!!!
I was never worried much by the cold. I found cold air on my skin bracing. Like anyone, I felt cold if I was inactive and would need to put on more clothes, but I didn’t need really warm coats for outdoors. I feel the cold more now, but still less than others around me, & it can take time for me to realise that my mildly aching hip or hands would be better off if they were warmer.
And I’ve realised that I have a high threshold of pain. Instead of a graduated scale of 1-10, I have “extremely mild something, maybe discomfort?; dull ache/mild pain; the same, but accompanied by grumpiness; excruciating pain that causes me to swear like a trooper or go deathly silent!.
My hip dysplasia is being treated with strengthening exercises for the glutes & I’m already noticing the difference.
But I’m concerned that the deterioration of my hip due to arthritis etc might be worse than assumed given that I haven’t been experiencing severe pain. So I might have a chat to my doc about whether I should have a CT scan. I do need to get a bone density check as well. I don’t want extra complications arising as a result of not detecting bone issues.
But apart from banging on about my own issues, my point is that autistic people who have noticed similar issues when it comes to perception of pain, discomfort etc, need to be aware that an injury or condition might be worse than it appears and go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed as a result. Time often matters.
We might struggle to listen to our bodies, but we need yo practice listening, & advocate well for ourselves. Yes it’s hard if we’re already seen as “weird”, or undiagnosed & written off as neurotic, hypochondriac etc. And yes, I realise that doing this is much harder if public healthcare is poor/unavailable.
