I've still not given up on #Vi as my editor instead of #Vim and to be perfectly honest, I'm not really missing the fancy Gruvbox theme and Vim's auto-completion. It's making me learn new tricks and stops me relying on the help of plugins. Good for the old grey stuff I'd say! I even changed the 88x31 button on my websites footer from Vim to Vi. #RunBSD #OpenBSD

Hmmm decisions decisions. As an #OpenBSD user I usually prefer #vim with just 2 plugins installed my gruvbox theme and colorizer to color html color codes. But I'm wondering if I really need syntax highlighting and theme support ? You can see my rough and I mean rough .kshrc side by side in vim and vi. I do like a splash of color and do enjoy the command completion though so I guess I will tinker with n(vi) further. #vi

It takes aaaaaaaaaaages to compile #GoToSocial for #OpenBSD on a #Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W... but it's a good stableness benchmark. So far, it has not hanged - now that I use another Ethernet Hat and POE adapter.

So here's the difference between nvi2 on the left and n(vi) #OpenBSD own vi editor. As you can see the multibyte character fonts show up in nvi2 but not in n(vi).

#OpenBSD friends - I need help with backups.

I make backups on external USB disks. Now what tool should I use? I don't need any deduplication and stuff like that.
What I need is quick restore procedure.

So what should I use ? I was thinking rsync or dump/restore.

What would you suggest considering above ?

Whoah ! My #OpenBSD #vi config is a hearty 10 lines long compared with the 260 of my minimal #vim config. Yeah I know I don't have theme support and what not but I'm prepared to give this a shot without all the fancy bells and whistles. The only thing it doesn't do is display my icon fonts in scripts but it's made me wonder if I even need them now. Yes nvi2 will display them but it feels like cheating to install that when n(vi) is in the base on OpenBSD.

I'm actually convinced that my issue of not being able to doas sysupgrade -s past #473 is an issue with either the upgrade script or the bsd.mp kernel. I mean if it was a configuration issue explain to me how I can successfully rollback to 473 dated 14th May or even further back and the mp kernel boots perfectly. No partitions are anywhere near full. Yet if I upgrade the mp kernel will not boot just giving an error 255 unknown.
So in my eyes this is an #OpenBSD current issue because if it was mine then rolling back wouldn't work either ???

Think I might be heading towards a full rebuild of my #OpenBSD desktop if I cannot work out why doas sysupgrade -s will not buid a correct /bsd.mp ( /bsd ) ??
Tried removing it so a forced sysupgrade would redo it but still it refuses to boot /bsd only /bsd.sp and /bsd.rd
I'll give it a few days of running on a single cpu rather than multiple to see if a new snapshot fixes anything and maybe someone will come up with an answer on their bugs mailing list too ? 😒

Silly question of the #NetBSD folk… I know some of the BSD kernels (notably #FreeBSD, and once upon a time, #OpenBSD) were capable of Linux syscall emulation, meaning they could run Linux applications.

Is this still the case, and if so, does it extend to containerisation like #Docker? Platforms of interest would be `x86-64` and `aarch64`.

A bit of a ranty blog today.

I really want to write software that's actually good.

Increasingly, I believe the trick to doing this isn't #types, or #proglang , or formal methods, or #agile, or #XP, or #TDD, or any other fancy technique, process, or technology. It's Care.

And the reason most software still sucks? It's not stupidity, and it's not because everyone else has been duped by the "wrong" development ideology (waterfall, formal methods, agile, etc). It's the Market.

Here's what #openbsd , #slackware, and #emacs are teaching me about taking the time to work on what matters.

Super serious audio sampling tools:

this is my POC terminal audio sampler.

The noises are those three samples. The UI is you just press
the number of the sample and it plays it.
I am showing off the audio part.

The audio wav files are playing from scratch each
time, (like the sndio handle and the libsndfile handle
are not re-used). If I keep going on this I will
fix that so there is like a static list of wav files.
And I will re-use the sndio handle or i will
have like a sndio handle "pool".

I have previous curses programs where I use libevent
to make them not "one thing at a time".

So like you could play wav files over each other up
to the amount of sndio handles you have.
(theoretically)

A long shot goal is I could have the program be able
to record a wav file for you O_o.
