And how is your day so far?
neurodiversity
OK, Imma try to teach you all something about evolution, because I fancy myself a theorist.
.
obviously, your first line of adaptive defense in a dynamic environment, is your brain.
.
The climate changes, you don’t wait for evolution, you think of ways to keep cool first, thinking is adapting, right? If you didn’t have that brain, it would be straight up fast and brutal darwinism, you might dehydrate the first hotter summer, trying to cross a desert you always could.
.
Probably the most active evolution happens there, on the front line, in our brains, and that’s not plainly visible. My idea is that some time after the latest coating of ice, human things changed quickly and not so’s you’d know by looking at them, things changed in human brains, in what has become the majority sort, the sort in charge. That sometime after the ice, human brains started adapting, evolving a new type of brain that is adapted and adapting further for the human created environment that most humans live in.
.
Perhaps it’s true that since we make everything for these bodies, we will see a pause in the skeletal changes, but we do not make a world for what was the human brain, we drift into new and horrific social environments and force the brain to adapt. That isn’t stopping.
.
It’s half of the human noise, Adapt, get stronger, keep up, fall in line. I’m not asking, I’m telling you. Resilience is adaptation. There is nothing in evolutionary theory that says a steady pressure means evolution stops; it is exactly steady pressure that causes change, steady change.
.
So the majority human type’s brain is increasingly adapted for the human social environment and by their social orientation they deem that the socially unadapted are “divergent,” - this means divergent from their evolutionary trajectory, not from anything else, and if we zoom out and take a longer perspective we can see that is the majority of humans who are divergent with respect to the rest of life on Earth this way, that they have parted ways from the larger community of life and that this is the very definition of asking to be selected out.
.
Let’s take a break. 😇💜

I just had the realization that the movie Real Genius had some cute, early depictions of neurodiversity. Not really accurate of course, it was an 80s movie and a comedy (mostly), but I can better understand now why it resonated with me so much.
Society tells us rest is laying down and doing nothing. That's not what it looks like for everyone. In fact, it can be quite the opposite for some.
The last song I shared within my last relationship, desperately trying to find myself in all the chaos.
I really do love the vocals, especially in the last part of the song, where the German and French words overlap smoothly and create a soft but also dense atmosphere (3:50).

I translated the German words for you:
Passionate, emancipated, sentimental, determined, vulnerable, strong-willed, sensitive, sensual, frail, peaceful, temperamental, distant, crazy, cautious, modern, receptive

Our Neurodiversity Celebration wall is up in the school library I manage. I personally picked most of the books this year. Some of my favorites are in this photo. Let me know if you have any recommendations for neurodiversity-affirming books for kids. I know it really should say 'Neurodivergent' but I am bowing to common usage here. #bookstodon #neurodiversity #neurodivergent
"Autism should not be seen as single condition with one cause, say scientists"
Subject: Autistic ‘black and white’ thinking.
It's framed as a deficit often seen in autism, but... is it that simple?
Autistic people are traditionally criticized for our inflexibility, or cognitive rigidity.
But I think this isn’t the whole picture.
To start with what we know, here are ten things we autistic people generally have in common (refs at the end of the thread):

Do you think you've suffered any trauma simply due to being autistic?
(trauma being pain that stays with you)
If so, what are the experiences you've suffered most trauma from? Are they sensory ones? Social ones? Or something else?
More info truly welcome - comment below
I've put my own response in the first post below ⬇️

Being surrounded by neurotypical people all my life, then finding the neurodiversity and autistic culture movements online and finding other @autistics like me, is like finally being given the guidebook on how to guide my manual car when I’ve been reading the guidebook for automatic cars all my life and struggling.

Not diagnosing a kid doesn’t mean they won’t notice they’re different, it just means they’ll think they’re struggling because they’re stupid or broken, not because their brain works differently.
📋 SURVEY FOR AUTISTIC PEOPLE
It is often said that autistic people have difficulty finding employment (I once read that 70-80% of autistic people are unemployed), but on the internet I mostly come across autistic people who do have jobs. So I would be interested to know how things are for you – whether you have a job or are unemployed. You can also describe your situation in the comments, e.g., why you have trouble finding a job.
The question in the survey is: Do you have a job?
Boost for better results. Thanks! 🙏🏻

Autistic people don’t just ‘fail to fit’ into social norms and into the social order.
It seems quite a lot of the time we actually challenge the social order - often even just by existing.
"A major new review has put hundreds of alternative autism treatments under the microscope—and most didn’t hold up. Scientists analysed decades of research and found little reliable evidence that popular approaches like probiotics, acupuncture, or music therapy truly work. Alarmingly, safety was often ignored, with many treatments never properly evaluated for side effects."

Autism and ADHD are just words. Words that give me the possibility to talk about myself, about my experiences and to understand myself.
They stand for something that is so much more complex, something that defines my identity. Yes, it defines my identity. If it defines a part of the identity of a person, if they prefer to wear sneakers or high heels, the fact that I struggle with wearing almost any kind of clothes, especially shoes, it’s very much part of mine. It has a strong influence on how I can express myself and my personality, how I experience the world around me and my ability to interact with it. And that is just one example of many aspects that are part of my neurodivergence, of me being AuDHD, being shaped by CPTSD.
We need simplifications to communicate, to talk about our neurodivergence, to share experiences, even if these words can’t describe this experience as a whole. They are just placeholders for something so much more complex than a diagnosis, a set of traits, a label other people put on us, but they give us a voice. They are a tool that enables us to connect with each other and getting to know each other as neurodivergent people. And we need that so much.
The #Kickstarter campaign for Kiersten's Lilypad Library #ChildrensTelevision project is live now! She's raising money to make a full-fledged pilot episode with a real set, original music, and fairly compensated cast and crew (#union labor rates!)
I'm incredibly proud of all of the work Kiersten has put in, and a #donation to her campaign, or even just a #boost would go a long way toward the funding goal.
