Some serendipitous space beauty to start your weekend.

NASA's new PUNCH mission, designed to study the solar wind, just took this ethereal image of the Moon passing the (blocked out) Sun. The Moon's night side is facing us, but it's beautifully lit by Earthshine.

$During commissioning, PUNCH’s NFI instrument captured this image of the new Moon as it passed by the Sun in the sky on April 27, 2025. The new Moon appears full, because it is illuminated by Earthshine (sunlight reflected off Earth). The image helped the PUNCH team confirm that the Moon will not obscure NFI’s view of the corona and solar wind. The dark circle near the bottom is the shadow of NFI’s occulter, which hides the Sun. The occulter, which was not yet fully aligned with the Sun, is surrounded by a narrow bright ring of diffracted light. Around that is a large, hazy circle of stray light glinting off the occulter (the Moon is inside that circle). Outside that is a small, dimmer region of the sky that is less affected by glint.$

This image, taken with ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT), shows the supernova remnant SNR 0509-67.5. These are the expanding remains of a star that exploded hundreds of years ago in a double-detonation – the first photographic evidence that stars can die with two blasts.

The data were captured with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument at the VLT. MUSE allows astronomers to map the distribution of different chemical elements, displayed here in different colours. Calcium is shown in blue, and it is arranged in two concentric shells. These two layers indicate that the now-dead star exploded with a double-detonation. Hydrogen (H alpha) is shown in orange.

I wanted to get a picture of a puffin with the mountains in the background instead of the sea. Without a wide-angle lens, this was the best I could pull off lol. I'm still kind of proud of it, though.

As we kick off into summer, I always like to think back to just a few months ago when summer was just a dream, and cold was the present reality.

Imagine a striking bird that lives along the coast, especially on rocky shores. The Sooty Oystercatcher is entirely black, from its head to its tail, looking very sleek. What really stands out are its bright, almost glowing, red-orange bill, which is quite long and strong, and its pinkish-red legs. These vibrant colors against its dark body make it quite distinctive.

These birds are found in places like Australia and New Zealand. They are often seen walking confidently on rocks or along the waterline, searching for food. Their name "oystercatcher" gives a clue about what they eat, but they're not just limited to oysters! They use their powerful, specially designed bill to pry open or even hammer into hard-shelled creatures like mussels, limpets, and, yes, oysters. They can also snip the muscles inside a slightly open shell to get to the soft meat. Besides shellfish, they'll also eat crabs, marine worms, and other small creatures found in the coastal environment.

An object called 2017 OF201 is shaking up our ideas about the outer zone of our solar system.
It follows an extreme, 25,000-year orbit.
