My birdbath garden at mom's old cottage. Bumblebees loved the globe thistle, fritillary butterflies swarmed the coneflowers, and the red bee-balm was guaranteed to draw ruby-throat hummingbirds. There's a serviceberry tree to the left of the glider and a witch hazel tree in the border behind it. A mail-order ginseng plant liked this location and reseeded itself. Photo by my mom.

Hopefully, today is a yardwork day. I tend to put things off whenever I feel like it, but the ever-growing grass serves as a reminder that I need to take action—kind of like my cluttered desktop. For weeks, I've been telling myself I need to clear it off, yet I let things stay there simply as reminders that each item requires attention. You see how that works, right? Then there's the water bottle in the corner—I have no idea why it's there, but it's been sitting for a while. A mystery not worth solving. I also need to vacuum my office floor. The Roomba comes through every morning, but lately, it just seems to shuffle things around.

Notice things.

Sometimes, when I'm out walking, I spot something and snap a picture. Unlike the days of film, there’s no cost to taking the shot—even if it seems unremarkable at the time. But later, as I sift through the photos, I notice details I overlooked. When I took this particular shot, I focused on the birds without really seeing the forest around them. I’m not sure what species they are, but I’d guess they belong to the local pigeon battalion.

Decided to make my art focus on useful plants for a while, brushing up on several skills to see if I can pull together something both useful and pretty. Need to brush up on my fonts, but not until I finish sketching the pollinator garden.

Found and positively identified salsify, one of those veggies we loved back in ye olde days of yore. Collected a sample to take home and sketch, then I cut the greenery off and planted the root before the rains begin. I also gathered seed, planted some, and will save the rest. Might try indoors soon. Bolted stalks were easy to spot above the grass, was glad I went when I did, it was next to a field that was recently mowed, their field was probably next. Found a bunch of maple seedlings, washed them with vinegar and gave to the birds, weaving between the bars of the cage. Made me realize I could grow maple and elm indoors for the birds. Seedlings gently pulled up are doing okay in water, also planted samara.

This is a panoramic image of Yosemite Valley. I created this by taking a series of images from the Tunnel View parking lot and stitched them together.
This was taken in early spring so Bridal Veil Falls was flowing at capacity in the lower part of the image. This image captures most of the major formations in Yosemite Valley.

I've always been drawn to the sound of water flowing through a small stream. It's not a roar, not even a forceful murmur, but rather a soft, gentle trickle that is constantly in the background.

What I enjoy about hiking is that panoramic view. You stand, as if at the top of the world, and survey what feels, at that moment, like your domain.

The question isn't, "Do I take a walk?" but, "Should I bring the dog?"

Because she knows when I'm going on a walk. Pacing intently, tail thumping against the furniture, she looks at me with those eyes, then runs off to the laundry room where she knows the harness is.

But do I want to deal with the tugging and pulling, snuffling and sniffing?
