Stoneman Bridge in Yosemite Valley is a popular spot for photographers and painters alike. Looking up to the Northeast the Merced River flows down from Happy Isle and crosses in Front of Half Dome. To the south you can follow the river down along the eastern walls of the valley.

A quiet winter hush settles over Yosemite Valley in this scene. Fresh snow softens every surface, turning the landscape into a world of muted whites and silvers. They are trying to warm up and will leave on their own.

I was surprised to spot this beautiful Green Heron (Butorides virescens) on one of my outings to Lake Ballinger this winter, gliding gracefully over the tranquil lake, displaying the beautiful colors of their vibrant wings. I usually see them here between Spring and Fall. Evidently some of them are wintering in Wester Washington to my delight.

When painting this abstract landscape painting, I had fun letting watercolor, ink and water flow and playing with the expressive color contrast between the bold red of the barn and the bright greens of the landscape.
