Public Domain Spotlight: Rhapsody in Blue

Rhapsody in Blue stands as an iconic piece of American music with riveting orchestration, and a cultural footprint that reflects the modernity of the early 20th century.

Cover of the original sheet music of Rhapsody in Blue

Harms - http://riverwalkjazz.stanford.edu/#bonus-content/george-gershwin-20s

The design is bold and artistic, featuring an abstract, modernist composition with a mix of geometric and organic shapes in shades of red, black, beige, and blue.

The typography is striking, with "RHAPSODY IN BLUE" displayed in large, decorative block letters that have a mosaic-like pattern.

Below the title, the text reads "For Jazz Band and Piano," emphasizing the fusion of classical and jazz elements in the composition.

#OTD in 1925.

Ravel's opera L'enfant et les sortilèges (written from 1917 to 1925), to a libretto by Colette, is premiered at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo.

After being offered the opportunity to write a musical work, Colette wrote the text in eight days. Several composers had proposed to Colette that she write to music, but she was only excited by the prospect of Ravel.

Cover of the piano reduction, illustrated by André Hellé, 1925.

André Hellé - Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Paris - département Musique

Hellé’s playful and expressive artwork reflects the opera’s imaginative spirit, drawing viewers into a surreal realm where furniture dances, teacups sing, and a garden comes alive. The charming visual design is both a reflection of the child’s imagination and an artistic complement to Ravel’s rich, colorful music.

🎧 Artist: #KAGEoner / #KAGE in City: #Amora #Setubal Portugal 🇵🇹 01/2025 - Title: "X18-AROMA" 🎶 - #Art #Streetart #Mural #Music #Artist #Cassette #Walkman

Streetartwall. An original mural with a very musical comic-style figure has been sprayed/painted on a white house wall. The figure is an old Walkman, dressed in an olive-colored jacket and with metal hands. He has green headphones on and is holding an old music cassette in his hands. On the cassette is written X18 Amora (a HipHop/Rap Music Producer). There is already a cassette in the cassette compartment with round holes that look like his eyes. This cute cassette man makes you want to press play immediately.

yep, that’s a grief seed in the thumbnail. sayaka miki impacted me greatly growing up. that’s why i go by oktavia and use a grief seed as a symbol! she’s very important to me.

Surprised me, Sayaka really wouldn’t be my first pick!
I always kind of disliked her… but I guess in retrospect, she did have mostly good intentions? The parable of the naïve goodie that gets too wreckless. I think I get the appeal, now.

I first played a Gibson J-45 over a year ago on a visit to the guitar shop with my kid. I was instantly haunted (posessed?) by the quality and the sound. Since then, I couldn't get it out of my head. I told the sales guy today that I either needed to buy it, or have him perform an exorcism.

I also told him that I was pretty fond of my demons, so he'd better take my card.

It's astonishing how much difference it makes to play a quality instrument!
