Rated The Odyssey 7/10
Lots of spectacle and super high production value. Kept me entertained, though some of the dialogue lacked the gravitas i would expect for such an epic, and a few of the performances stood out as a bit stilted relative to the rest of the star-studded cast
Rated Moby Dick 6/10
Huston has made some memorable movies but Moby Dick is not one of them. The cast seems to have been skimmed off a tub of lard, with Gregory Peck totally out of his depth as Captain Ahab, unable to convey the main character blind obsession and descent into madness. The choice of casting Austrian actor Friedrich von Ledebur as Polynesian Queequeg only adds to the overall silliness. There is some good stuff like Orson Welles cameo as Father Mapple, the gathering at the harbour by by those left behind, the vastness of the sea, but as a whole the movie is is a clumsy production and it shows. At least Moby Dick gets to live another day and I will always be grateful to Melville for penning that open ending.
