This is a low-key Cohen Brothers yarn set in American '60s suburbia. Larry Gopnik is forced to question every one of his values as his life falls apart. Visually this is a pretty cold movie, but that juxtaposes very nicely against the heartwarming storyline. There's not a lot 'funny' about what is undoubtedly a comedy, but if you like gallows humour you'll get a lot from A Serious Man.

Observe and Report is as schizophrenic as it’s main character. It just doesn't work on so many levels, and ultimately seems confused as to what type of movie it wants to be. I suspect it was a good script that was ruined as it squeezed through the Hollywood production cycle. I usually like Seth Rogan, but he was an unwise choice as star. He really can't (or the script didn't allow him to) 'do edgy'. His performance, and the movie as a whole, left me feeling completely cold.
