I saw this granite boulder in Creason woods today, and thought it looked like a face, covered in moss. Pareidolia is the term that explains why we see faces in inanimate objects..or it may be a sleeping giant 😊. #Dartmoor #Devon #mosstodon #photography

We've spotted this cute Barred Owlet standing tall, showing off her legs high up in the moss-covered trees, as s/he perched on a thin branch, being vigilant and poised, one of her wings stretched out. Such a character it looked like having wool leggings on, made me smile.
It was not easy to notice this little fledgling, her feathers blended in with the natural environment so much, providing camouflage among the dense, Pacific Northwest forest setting at Beaver Lake Park, Washington state in May 2024.

A colony of unknown mushrooms grows on a hollow log transformed into a spring fountain in the German Black Forest

A hollow log was put horizontally as a spout for a natural spring in the forest, the water cascades out of it in a thin drizzle. The log is covered with a colony of brown-gold colored mushrooms with a flat cap. On both sides of the spring, the ground is covered in lush vegetation

I guess this is what moss looks like after the sporophytes have blown their tops and dispersed their spores? Thanks to the hashtag #mosstodon I've paid a lot closer attention to moss this year so this is all new to me.

Some silvergreen byrum moss but there's nothing silver or green about it. The sporophytes have blown their tops (that used to be pointy), and now they look like red cups or goblets on top of long slender stems.

Waxcaps are tiny bursts of color you often see at this time of the year. Red, yellow, green, gray, purple… but it’s the orange ones I most enjoy. Especially when in a mound of lush moss.

They can be a bear to ID as many species have a large range of color over their short lifespans. Field guides often differ in the colors they depict.

I’m happy just to see them on my hikes.
