Light Streaks — generative photography

A small selection of long-exposures of randomly generated IFS (aka Iterated Function Systems), a family of very oldskool primitive/trivial fractal functions, but which can produce a fairly wide variety of outcomes. Each image is the result of billions of iterations of a single particle being iteratively transformed (meaning the particle's current position is used as the input for computing its next position etc.) For each iteration & position a tiny amount of light is being captured, slowly revealing an image, just like a negative does in analog film photography.

Some of these images have been "exposed" (aka computed) for up to 30 mins. The smaller the amount of light captured per iteration, the smoother (less grainy) the outcome...

(For the more technical: This is one of these projects where a floating point pixel buffer _really_ makes all the difference! My exposure rate is only 0.001 per pixel per frame, some of the images use even weaker settings... That means for a pixel to become fully white is has to be visited at least 1000 times [or more])

This is a black-and-white close-up photograph of a sturdy metal hitching ring mounted on a very old, heavily weathered wooden barn wall. The wood shows a rough, deeply cracked texture. The grain runs straight up and down like long wrinkles. You can feel how old and worn the wood is: there are splits, peeling patches, dark knots, and areas where the surface has eroded. Right in the center sits a rectangular metal mounting plate, solidly fixed to the wood with four screws — one at each corner — each with a clear star-shaped head. The metal plate itself is a bit shiny in places but also shows tarnish, scratches, and the patina of long use. Attached to the middle of this plate is a large, thick, perfectly circular metal ring. The ring dangles freely downward, smooth and solid, big enough to easily loop a lead rope or reins through. The lighting creates sharp contrast: the bright metallic hardware stands out strongly against the dark, textured wood. The photo is tightly framed so nothing else is visible — just this simple, practical piece of farm equipment. Overall feeling: rugged, reliable, and full of character. It’s exactly the kind of ring you would find on an old stable or barn to safely tie up a horse while brushing, feeding, or saddling it.

Citadel (2022)

I edited this image last night. I've been trying to crack it's puzzle for years and failed, struggling with it's colours and tones. I desperately wanted an epic shot here when I visited #Yukon in 2022, I'd scoured maps to find a suitable foreground for this peak. But, the weather didn't co-operate the day-of.

He went out with me and did his #1 right away after I came home from work. After supper, when he usually does #2, I tried to make him do it before forecast heavy rain starts. But...he wasn't interested and wanted to come back in. We will try again after the rain lets up.
It's super humid . While I was with him in the yard, mosquitos ate me alive...Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer here in GA...But school is out, no more school buses for a while!!!
