1. The colors in the UP were at their best — a gift I didn’t expect.
2. The woods in the Hiawatha Forest felt grounding and steady. It was home in my childhood and young adulthood.
3. On a trip shaped by loss, it helped to find a moment of quiet beauty.

Today's small moment - When driving over the Mackinac Bridge, I love how the second tower appears perfectly framed within the first.
On a cloudy day like this, it’s almost hard to believe we’re crossing a body of water at all—it feels higher than it is, with nothing but clouds and a faint glimpse of the horizon in view.
I’ll never get tired of crossing the Mackinac Bridge, whether I’m heading north to the Upper Peninsula or south to the Lower Peninsula.

The view from the window at dad’s place in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is partially obscured with the blizzard conditions they’re experiencing there. So far, power remains on, thank goodness. Wind gusts in the area are 60mph. Expecting 12-15 inches of snow. #snow #michigan #upperpeninsula #winter
Today’s small moment - one of my favorite photographs from Whitefish Point—even though the lighthouse is actually behind me. I’ve learned to always turn around during a shoot and see what else is there. This time, it was a lake freighter slowly appearing on the horizon.
I love beach scenes that include more than just water, sky, and sand. As in life, there are always extra layers waiting to be seen—if we take a moment to look.

Home for a quick stay after a difficult week, just in time to catch this sunset. It was a lovely way to be welcomed home.

Millions of People Depend on the Great Lakes’ Water Supply. Trump Decimated the Lab Protecting It.

The Trump administration’s slashing of budgets and staff have Great Lakes scientists concerned that they have lost the ability to protect the public from toxic algal blooms, which can kill animals and sicken people.

Kindness doesn’t always show up when I expect it. I’m learning I can’t control that—only how much space I give it, and who I choose to remain.
When I was a teenager, Dad and I were at a grocery store checkout where the cashier was having a hard day. Dad met her with kindness anyway,. I asked him how he could do that and he told me, “Her bad mood doesn’t have to change who I am.”
I’ve carried that lesson with me ever since. Some days it’s easier than others. But it’s still the way I want to move through the world.
This photograph was taken nearly twenty years ago at Tahquamenon Falls, on a cold winter day when the footing wasn’t easy. Dad was always willing to come along when I headed out with the camera. I think of it now as a reminder that I’m still walking with his guidance, even now.

It was early Sunday morning a couple years ago, and I hit the road early to drive north out of Ann Arbor, Michigan. The way the sun was shining through the trees and onto the road, the green of the trees, the blue of the sky....I just had to pull over to get this shot.

Once again strolling through my photo memories. This was from an early morning drive through Grosse Pointe, Michigan a couple years ago. The golden trees, quiet street, and sidewalks stirred up childhood memories of growing up in Michigan—even though this wasn’t my old neighborhood. Some places just feel like home. 🍂🚗 #Michigan #GrossePointe #Nostalgia #AutumnVibes

#3GoodThings #Michigan #BasketWeaving
1. I made my first woven basket at a workshop held at the Michigan Folk School in Ann Arbor. The tips of my fingers are numb, but it was a very enjoyable day in the beautiful countryside. (photo attached)
2. It's the longest my dog has ever been in the house by herself. No mishaps!! Hurray!!
3. Thankfully, I had leftovers that I could eat for dinner. My fingers would have a hard time cooking from the brutality of weaving rattan.

I’m finally heading home to Virginia after two months in Michigan settling my dad’s and brother’s estates. On the way home, I returned to the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Garden in Ann Arbor. I last visited a couple of years ago when I needed my soul to heal, and coming back now — stronger, steadier — closed the loop on everything that’s happened since.
People sometimes tell me to put down the camera and “just enjoy the moment,” but the photograph is what brings the moment back. And even for someone who’s never been there, an image can still matter. A photo doesn’t transfer my memories — it sparks theirs. Light, color, and mood give the viewer something to connect with, even without knowing what I was going through when I pressed the shutter.
The garden remains a peaceful place for my heart and soul.
