This is my #introduction (or #Introductions) post for the aus.social mastodon, as recommended by @aussocialadmin.
I'm new to this server and to #mastodon in general, so I'm still getting used to best practices.
Professionally, I'm a senior software engineer and absolutely love #programming.
I have over 10 years of professional experience, and in general, if I see a screenshot or graphic mockup of it, I can build it.

I'm from the oldest incorporated city in so-called #canada, #SaintJohn - home of the #irving empire.
I am an iconoclast - staunchly #antifascist, #antiracist, #anticapitalist, somewhere on the #autism spectrum, and 3 years into punishing #LongCovid. #WearAMask!!!
I've worked the last decade as #HeadOfSound at a beautiful heritage #theatre. Before that I was in #tech for a decade doing #development and #reverseEngineering. I've also worked in #electronics and other #audio fields.
I grew up in a musical family and have played in bands since 13. I'm on around 60 albums, have toured canada and the us, and am part of what is likely the most prolific band in canada: #Slugmilk.
I run a home mixing studio and a small printshop and I have a small "datacentre" which #selfhosts this #mastodon instance.
I'm here on the #fedi to learn from everyone, and to help others learn. I will help anyone with anything I can.

A part of me wants to apologize to #mastodon and the #fediverse for dragging that TERF platformer across the coals. I will not, however.
97.3% of the time, I mind my business. We talk about music, dabble in politics, you laugh at my corny jokes about struggling with python (and then send help), and post fun times from the Recording Academy parties.
However. Do not get it confused. When any person oppressed by hegemonic institutions is being attacked, I will speak, and it will be LOUD.
I really want to see #PeerTube succeed. But I don't see many videos slide across my #mastodon feed. It feels like PeerTube videos don't achieve wide federation.
I think this is because people don't follow as many PeerTube accounts and because PeerTube accounts don't post as often as Mastodon or other microblogging accounts.
Consider this... there isn't much downside to following all PeerTube accounts that you come across and boosting their posts *because* they are few and infrequent.

If someone you follow boosts too much stuff, you can hide just their boosts from your timeline by doing the following:
1. Go to the person's profile in Mastodon
2. Click the button with three dots (looks like ︙ or ⋯)
3. Click "Hide Boosts" or "Hide Reblogs" (they mean the same thing)
The person will not know you've done this, and it won't hide their own posts.
If you change your mind and want to see their boosts, repeat the same process but select "Show boosts".

There is a built-in translation system on Mastodon. If it's present on your server, you will see a "Translate" link below posts in other languages. Clicking the link will translate the post.
However, translation systems cost money to run, so not every server has it activated. If you're unsure whether your server has it or not, ask your admin. (You may also consider donating to them to help with their server bills.)
