Has anyone put together a curated list of #fediverse servers (preferably open source or at least with a public API) that:
- want to be found by the general public (I’m looking for a source of recommendations for a server picker in a client app)
- meet at least some reasonable minimum moderation/reliability standards?
I know #mastodon has joinmastodon.org/servers and pixelfed also has their own curated server list, but is there anything that isn’t software-specific?

There is an optional feature on Mastodon which lets you automatically delete your posts after a certain amount of time:

If you activate this, your posts that are older than a certain number of weeks, months or years are automatically deleted by your server.
The setup process for autodelete also lets you choose types of post or specific posts not to delete.
(If you want to keep everything, just don't activate autodelete 🙂 )

If you're using Mastodon through a computer, did you know you can access almost all of its functions through keyboard shortcuts? There's a complete list of shortcuts plus more info here:

Some of these will only make sense in Mastodon's multicolumn mode, but most of them work in all modes.
NOTE: You don't have to use any of these shortcuts, everthing can be done through the mouse too. The keyboard shortcuts are just for people who prefer them 🙂

Now you can filter posts by language, better structuring of the documentation and improvements in timeline rendering (performance).

It is a REALLY good idea to write an introductory post about yourself and pin it to your profile. Pinned posts appear at the top of your profile page, and they also have a special ability to federate much more widely than ordinary posts.
It's very quick and easy to do:

Here's why it matters: there's a quirk on Mastodon where some profiles may appear blank to people on some servers, but profiles with pinned posts never look blank to anyone!

Hello World!
I'm lucky to have made it this far in life avoiding #socialmedia sites- so why not make the inevitable misstep slightly less bad by having my first platform be the 'good' one? I'm intrigued by the lack of algorithmic mayhem #Mastodon provides, and I hope I can find some neat folks who may or may not be interested in what I have to say or post. Not sure what my experience here as a total SM novice will look like, but I'm here now. I guess.

2️⃣ Improved HTML tag handling with smart cleaning to preserve line breaks.
3️⃣ Added an infinite loop with a 60s delay to continuously analyze images in posts.
4️⃣ Enhanced error handling, with specific exceptions for redirects and other request issues.

Some good news about #Mastodon, there has been a very significant bit of code added which will automatically fetch all the replies in a thread. This means everyone will be able to see a thread's whole conversation no matter which server they are on! 🥳
The code has just been "merged" which means it should become available in the next update to Mastodon, hopefully within the next few months.

https://fantastic.earth is growing, literally. After running on a small 4 GB server for two years, we have recently migrated to a 64 GB server. Now we can host even more services for our members. We currently run these services:

- #Pixelfed (Image posting)
- #Bookwyrm (Book reading tracking)
- #Miniflux + #Feedlynx (Feed reading + Read-later bookmarking)
- #Nextcloud (Office suite and cloud storage)
Our server is paid and invite-only. If you know any existing members personally, and would like to use well-moderated and fast services, please reach out to them for an invite.

Hey new people, you don't have to use the official Mastodon app! There are lots of other options you can use such as third party apps etc. People who try these alternatives usually prefer them.
Unlike most social networks, Mastodon doesn't impose any particular app on you. You're free to use your account in whatever way works best for you.
Here is a guide to all your options:

You can be logged in with the same account on many apps at once 🙂
