Honestly, I thought I was being quiet, and that the deer couldn't possibly notice me. But one looked up, startled, and began to run. And they all began to run, because that's how they survive -- alerting one another to possible danger, and getting away from that danger.

They stay alive because they are aware that they are prey, and are determined to not be that prey.
