This is Carolina sweet shrub. And it does have a sweet clean smell. As a kid, my daddy claimed that his farts smelled like these.

They did not.

Bright green leaves, grow on dark woody stems.
They are topped with dark red flowers of unusual structure. It is beyond my abilities to describe the structure of the flowers.
It’s a small plant rarely more than 3 to 4 feet tall
