Google has now renamed Lake Ontario for US users. They don’t even show the real name in brackets.
I used a VPN to compare: Apple hasn’t renamed it (at least not yet), nor has Dutch service Here WeGo or OpenStreetMap.
Yet another reason to ditch Google, and US tech more broadly.

Anyone in the US searching for Lake Ontario on #GoogleMaps can no longer find it as of this weekend.
Users in the country will now see the smallest of the #GreatLakes identified as “Lake America” on that site, following #Trump’s idiotic executive order on Thursday mandating the change in how the US government refers to the lake amid his tense #trade war with #Canada.

I still have a subscription to the Associated Press stylebook, and today I got an email with an update on Lake Ontario, which says in part:
"Trump's order only affects how the United States government refers to the body of water."
"Lake Ontario has carried that name for more than 400 years. Refer to it by its original name. If it is relevant to the story, acknowledge and explain the name Trump has chosen."
Way to go, AP! And not surprising, since the AP issued a similar statement about the Gulf of Mexico.
