used to be you'd go to your local DoL to register when seeking employment. then, if needed, they'd add you to welfare rolls so you could get food stamps, Medicaid, rent-relief, etc.
Unemployment office + welfare is how we got data for #unemployment numbers.
Since Reagan/Bush era, most of that has been privatized & dismantled and for a reason... similar to #COVID19

Workers at a Volkswagen factory in Tennessee voted solidly to unionize with the UAW, after twice in the past voting down the #union.
This time, they may have noticed that union workers won higher pay and better benefits from US automakers in their strike last year.
