I read and loved the Mars trilogy quite a few years ago; this is a collection of short stories and poems set in that world, including some 'alternate future histories' checking in with some of the characters in a timeline where the colonisation did not go forward. #KimStanleyRobinson at the best of times is rambling and digressive. It's part of his charm. But this is him at his absolute most rambling, with most of the stories just following their characters around as they do outdoor recreation on Mars and think about life. But in the middle of this very inessential feeling book is a terrific 100 page novella, called Green Mars for some reason, describing an ascent of Olympus Mons. Yes, more outdoor recreation, but the stakes are a bit higher and it really is a great piece of ultrarealistic and detailed imaginative writing. @bookstodon #bookstodon
