Forward-thinking journalists are not letting the “media apocalypse” happen to them. Instead, they’re doing the work that arguably has been most critical all along: building direct connections with their readers. @404mediaco's @jasonkoebler and @ProPublica's @ben join fediverse futurist @mike for a conversation about the discovery and sustainability of quality journalism.

"We at the Media and Democracy Project have created 18 election coverage guidelines that draw inspiration from the work being done by journalism nonprofits and respected media critics. The guidelines propose three key principles: treating elections like they matter more than sports scores, clearly communicating threats to democracy, and protecting the public from disinformation. "

Task for today: Looking over my donations for the year to make sure I didn't miss anything.
And I just made a donation to the Associated Press (whose reporting I read all the time) — the ones who stood up to Trump and said it's the Gulf of Mexico, not the Gulf of America.
And its stylebook hasn't back down on the words it uses regarding immigration:
"Except in direct quotations essential to the story, use illegal only to refer to an action, not a person: illegal immigration, but not illegal immigrant.
Acceptable variations include living in or entering a country illegally or without legal permission. For people: immigrants lacking permanent legal status.
"Do not use the terms alien, unauthorized immigrant, irregular migrant, an illegal, illegals or undocumented (except when quoting people or government documents that use these terms). Many immigrants have some sort of documents, but not the necessary ones."

“‘If a fire occurs in the cabin, if we land on water, don’t check on the immigrants. Just make sure that you and the guards and the people that work for the government get off," one flight attendant was told.
“It was as if the detainees’ lives were worthless,’” said another.

Last week, we asked #NewstodonFriday readers if anyone else felt sick at the thought of the U.S. election, and here we are. Not much levity in this week’s thread, but rather stories on the state of journalism and media, how different outlets plan to tackle the Trump administration, and even one about how political polarization can literally make you sick. We’ve sprinkled a little lighter fare in there, including a beautiful Tiny Desk concert from Meshell Ndegeocello (close your eyes and scroll to the bottom if you can’t bear to read any news). Please check out the stories, follow the publications, click on the stories, subscribe, donate and otherwise support if you can. Independent media matters now, more than ever.

Nieman Labs has released its annual predictions for journalism package, which includes the opinions of media folks like Linda Solomon Wood of @NatObserver on facing down the fossil fuel industry, @StarTribune's Chase Davis on newsrooms and AI, and Ben Smith of @Semafor on how media needs to go back to bundling. Here's a link to all the predictions. Tell us in the comments what you think will happen to journalism in 2025, or what you'd like to see.

I'm so fucking glad I left journalism. I constantly see headlines that play the objective journalism bullshit and it's clear that dipshit writer will force me to read paragraphs about how, actually, maybe, just maybe, maybe there is some legitimacy to, say, Trans people never existing again. Editors at the publications I worked for hated me, I mean, hated me, because I'd send in headlines like.
"I sat in on a meeting where parents voted to refund intelligence because they voted to ban books. Here's my no fuck's given account.
Or,
"Something something happened with this sports team, but I was staring at his hands and wondering how they'd look holding my face, but here's a sports article because my editor hates me and sent me on this assignment.
Or, my personal favorite.
"I interviewed a cop for 45 minutes and here's his harrowing account of being afraid of skin with Melanin before he arrested all of them, making this crime report porn for the right wing friends in my life."
Stop saying that the link between autism and vaccines is "unproven". It is discredited. It is disproven. Disproven and unproven are not the same thing.
Journalists really need to stop referring to #ElonMusk's "Department of Government Efficiency" as if it were real. It's not, until and unless Congress creates and funds it. A president can listen to advice from anyone, but that's not the same as building an actual federal agency. Don't perpetuate a fraud. #journalism
Hi there! Another article for Dark Reading, this one focused on how to help avoid burnout. There was so much to cover and so much interesting work being done that I could only scratch the surface. My biggest takeaway is that work-related burnout is in WHO's book of disorders. That's real legitimacy, and I expect more scholarly work to come. Thanks endlessly to @neurovagrant and @Edent for providing their experiences and strategies. #DarkReading #cybersecurity #journalism #burnout #JobRelatedBurnout #selfPromotion
