Goblin town: a dull, gray netherworld. A figure with horns and a long tail stands in front of a glowing billboard displaying a subway map of some unknown city. The map has numerous interconnecting colored lines, rendered in sharp geometric lines. No city is recognizable, and no station names are legible. The figure, silhouetted in the greenish glow from the board, is slightly hunched, with short legs and long arms. It is holding a briefcase, and has a windup key sticking out of its back. A low fog hangs over the ground. Glowing green-white fluorescent tubes hang above the scene. A few dim, horned shapes roam in the background. The painting is signed "Chris Silverman".

A person stands in a clearing at night, a full moon visible in the sky. There are indications of low trees, or a meadow. The person is flying a huge, shield-shaped purple kite with a frowning monster's face on it. The kite has a single red eye, a long nose, and exposed yellow teeth, with red stripes on it as well. Its tail resembles a beard. It is the only colored object in an otherwise grayscale drawing.

A tall, stone Greek letter pi stands against a yellow sky. The letter looks like a monument, and is slightly chipped and cracked. The ground is rocky and purple. There's a blurry yellow treeline in the background. A few birds circle above. The painting is signed "Chris Silverman".

Jellyheart. A green skinned mermaid with long dark hair floats at sea, surrounded by a big group of jellyfish of all colours. Her skin is translucent, her empty ribcage clearly visible through it. She is holding a small pink jellyfish against her chest that symbolizes her heart.

A grim-faced bald man with a disproportionately large head and tiny legs stands in a dark area, holding a scepter or baton with a smiley face on it. A closer look at the head suggests that this may be rubber mask: the eye looks more like a hole. There is a very real, very red eye behind the mask. This is a primarily monochrome drawing, rendered in shades of black and eerie green.

Founded today, 1994: Mosaic Communications Corporation. You're probably more familiar with their second name, though: Netscape. My first glimpse of the web in 1995.

I was fascinated by that animated N icon. It got to me the way work by Dali and Magritte did: eerie, surreal, kind of haunting, with the glowing horizon and flying meteors during pageload. (90s internet meant seeing those meteors a *lot*).

Here's to yesterday's UI design, and yesterday's web.

A tall, glowing white figure stands astride the curved horizon of a dark planet, reaching over to touch hands with another glowing white figure, this one slightly smaller, on the other side of the planet. There is an eerie green auroral glow on the horizon. Above, many green-tailed meteors hurtle through a starry sky. Anyone who remembers browsing the web in the late 1990s might be reminded of something.

A full solar eclipse. The sun hangs in an eerie, purple sky, fully obscured, only a green and white corona visible. Below are several craggy mountains, also illuminated with a weird green light. On top of the closer mountain stands a small figure wearing a cloak, both arms raised to the sky, a staff clutched in the right arm. The figure appears to be staring directly at the sun without eclipse glasses, which one should never do, even if one is a sorcerer summoning the apocalypse.

The dim interior of a rocky cave. There is a small, craggy opening, letting in blue light. Farther inside the cave, towards the viewer, is an eerie scene: a glowing pearlescent sphere that is orange-red with tinges of purple. The sphere reflects blue light from the opening, but is also giving off its own reddish-yellow light that reflects off the cave walls. It is hanging from the ceiling, fixed to it by small threads as though it’s a cocoon or an egg. Whatever’s inside it isn’t visible. The painting is signed “Chris Silverman”.

#art #history: in 1939, billie holiday - born eleanora fagan on this day in 1915 - threw a punch with the release of her recording of 'strange fruit' - &, if she'd not persisted, it may not have been released until much later. columbia refused, at first (‘they won’t buy it in the south’), to let billie include it even though it had been a central & permanent pillar of her repertoire during her tenure at cafe society.
