A grim-faced bald man with a disproportionately large head and tiny legs stands in a dark area, holding a scepter or baton with a smiley face on it. A closer look at the head suggests that this may be rubber mask: the eye looks more like a hole. There is a very real, very red eye behind the mask. This is a primarily monochrome drawing, rendered in shades of black and eerie green.

Founded today, 1994: Mosaic Communications Corporation. You're probably more familiar with their second name, though: Netscape. My first glimpse of the web in 1995.

I was fascinated by that animated N icon. It got to me the way work by Dali and Magritte did: eerie, surreal, kind of haunting, with the glowing horizon and flying meteors during pageload. (90s internet meant seeing those meteors a *lot*).

Here's to yesterday's UI design, and yesterday's web.

#art #history: these words, a plea from teenaged rachel corrie (born #otd in 1979) to her mother. in 2003, she went to #palestine & by the 16th of march, the monsters had killed her.
rachel's death was deemed accidental by an israeli investigation & the soldier who crushed her was exonerated...because of course he was.

#art #history: in 1939, billie holiday - born eleanora fagan on this day in 1915 - threw a punch with the release of her recording of 'strange fruit' - &, if she'd not persisted, it may not have been released until much later. columbia refused, at first (‘they won’t buy it in the south’), to let billie include it even though it had been a central & permanent pillar of her repertoire during her tenure at cafe society.

A bizarre ghost-shaped creature, vaguely reminiscent of the ghosts in Pac-Man. It has a dome-shaped head and no arms. The lower half of it is ragged. Its color is a mixture of crimson and roughly painted, iridescent green. The green texture extends beyond its body, as though it is dripping or glowing.
