#art #history: jazz juggernaut, arthur blakey (born #otd in 1919 to a single mum who died soon after art arrived), was raised by a family friend. he first gravitated toward the piano, but soon found his true groove with the drums & rose up through the ranks playing alongside bebop monsters charlie parker, dizzy gillespie & thelonious monk.

behind her is a lemon yellow orb.
her lips are bright red & she's cast in a pale turquoise.

I drew another LP cover – one of my favorite Pink Floyd albums, and their tribute to Syd Barret. This is an alternate version that started as a sticker, but has later been used for casette tapes, CDs and LP box sets. The reference for this image is the 50 year anniversary edition of the album.

The original design was created by George Hardie, a graphic designer and illustrator working at Hipgnosis, a London based art design group that specialised in creating album cover artwork for rock musicians and bands. After spending hours and hours with this, I'm in awe of mr. Hardie's skills, creating this (and so many more) using analog tools only.

A circlular sticker design. Across the top at a 45° angle shows two machines clasped together, resembling a handshake. The machine on the left is translucent, while the other appears to be shiny metal. The whole circle is divided into four quarters in different colours. The pink quarter, located on upper-left, has the sun shining and "PINK FLOYD" in big font; below the band name is "WISH YOU WERE HERE" in small font. The yellow quarter at lower-left displays sand dunes. The blue quarter at upper-right shows blue skies. The green quarter at lower-right displays green- or teal-coloured water.

A person without a head pushes a hand trolley on which is placed a giant stone head. The head is several times the size of the person and rectangular, with harsh, craggy features and empty eyes. A small hole on its cheek suggests that it might be a mask. The head is a dull, stony blue. The ground and background are bright green. The painting is signed "Chris Silverman".

FRIDAY (1982)
Acrylic - 30" x 20"

Robert Heinlein does create memorable characters! Not even halfway through this book I had a nearly photographic image of Friday in my mind. By the time I finished I felt confident about the substance and approach my painting would have. 1/4

#sciencefiction #illustration #robertheinlein #delreybooks

A woman in a blue denim jumpsuit stands in front of a view of space as seen through a gold trimmed porthole. The central zipper of her outfit is drawn down to her waist exposing bare skin. Her short cropped, sandy blonde hair has a slight curl. Her eyes reflect vibrant blue set in a gaze directly forward. The silhouette of a planet can be seen in the round viewport behind her. A star emerges from behind the planet and flares above her right shoulder. A moon with bright crescent highlight hangs over her left shoulder.

‘kiss me & you will see how important i am.’
i'm wishing a sketchy birthday to la plath, born #otd in 1932 - &, even though i've not a chance in high hades of achieving a scintilla of the written eloquence that she displayed, here's my scribbled ode. [cheeky wee thread follows]

digital pencil & ink sketch of a young & smiling young writer, sylvia plath. her gaze meets yours & she exudes quiet confidence, her arms crossed in front of her chevron-bearing, cap sleeved collegiate jumper. an abstract broad-stroke background cut through by lines that form a trapezoid sits behind sylvia.
colours are peach, coral, auburn, red & off-white.

A knight in armor, carrying a shield and sword, stands on the edge of a greenish brown, perfectly rectangular cliff. The shield is red, with a gold cross on it. Across from the cliff, hovering in the air, are 10 gold coins, arranged in two perfectly parallel columns. The overall scene suggests a classic video game such as Mario. Below, in the distance, are some purple mountains, and there are a few white clouds in the otherwise blue sky. The painting is signed "Chris Silverman".

even amongst the rebellious throngs of her corvidae crew, the magpie is the DGAF-est of them all. curious, clever, dressed to impress & so resourceful that two tools are all she needs, this charming gobshite will steal your heart every time.
#decembird #magpie #music #punkRock #birds #art #illustration

digital ink drawing shows a eurasian magpie crouched upon a post (that is decorated in pink & black in a way that evokes a punk rock tiger striped motif). the bird seems to be zoomed in on someone or something below. from the beak comes a black zigzag that leads to a speech box in which the words 'punk rock' appear in pink, uppercase, jagged font.
