Finally made it out for my first ride of 2026 – 53km on a relatively warm & sunny Friday afternoon after a fortnight of cold, snow, ice, & wet 🤷‍♂️

A bare deciduous tree in the flat countryside, seen with the setting sun behind it, and with some slight cloud around the horizon. There are many crows flying away from the tree, shortly after deciding to move somewhere new.

It's mad out there – lots of new species in the garden, but many of them proving photographically elusive in the warm, sunny conditions 😬

But it's only mid-April – there's time ... 🕰️👊

Among the cooperative ones: a very pretty juniper shield bug (Cyphostethus tristriatus; 🇩🇪 Buntrock [meaning "colourful skirt" 🙂]).

From the garden today, something rather rare, I believe 🙂

It's a leaf-rolling sawfly, genus Pamphilius, but many of the more common ones are not good matches.

After much searching, I think I've found it – the belted rose spinner (P. inanitus; 🇩🇪 Rosengespinstblattwespe).

Only five prior observations in Germany on iNaturalist 😱

A highly-coloured sawfly seen from above on a green rose leaf. The fly has a yellow and black head, with a ruddier colour below the eyes, and brown antennae. There are yellow patches on either side of the head towards the rear. The thorax is black with a strong yellow rim at the front, and the legs are all yellow. The abdomen is firstly ruddy, then black, with a hint of a yellow tip. The wings are clear, but with very strong, thick, prominent black veins, plus small yellow patches on the sides.
