Frost in the Valley Of the Moon

This image was taken during the middle of winter here in Northern California. We had a cold snap that had left a layer of frost on the ground for a few days and I really wanted to capture it as this is about as close as we will ever get to having snow on the ground. I drove up in the early morning to catch the day before the sun had started warming the ground.

Frost In The Valley Of The Moon

The scene opens in a hush of winter stillness, the kind that feels almost audible—soft, crystalline, and breath‑held. In the foreground, a wide sweep of vineyard rows stretches across the valley floor, each line of dormant vines dusted with a delicate, silvery frost. The frost clings to every branch and wire like powdered sugar, giving the landscape a fragile, lace‑like texture that seems as though it would melt at the warmth of a breath.
