This qxl video driver issue with #FreeBSD #QEMU VM appeared more interesting than I thought: in another boot environment #BE where I installed #Xlibre instead of #Xorg, using #qxl driver and startx in a #TTY brought up a bare X session with a #Xterm. Quitting the xterm instance successfully terminated X session and brought back TTY session, while on #Xorg quitting the session resulted in a full black screen, no tty. Switching ttys from with QEMU's sendkey failed to get any tty bacl either. If a window manager like #CWM was launched by startx, however, both Xlibre and Xorg failed with a #SegmentFault error. 2/n

Nice wee update on my #FreeBSD #ThinkPad now that I'm using pkg for updates instead of freebsd-update and everything went smoothly. I'm now running FreeBSD 15.1-RELEASE-p1.

UPDATE

So plugging in USB3 memory sticks worked OK but then I started with my sandisk usb2 devices and one by one they all started to work again!!?? Now I'm confused.

Strange issue writing to my USB memory sticks which used to work but since going over to pkgbase I cannot dd to any of them. I get dd: /dev/da0: Operation not supported yet I'm running as root using doas dd if=bios.img of=/dev/da0 bs=1M and I've done this before on this laptop as it's how I update my ThinkPad's BIOS. HELP!??

dmesg shows the same errors onall of my 20 odd memory sticks.

Just noticed there is no /dev/da0 in the /dev directory either when there used to be ????
The USB ports work as my external keyboard works and USB sound device. I cannot get my USB HD to work either and it did for sure. Seems like the pkgbase conversion has done something as the usb and usbmass modules are loaded as part of the kernel.

Where does the #sysrc utility come from in a #FreeBSD 15-RELEASE system? I was playing around with an experimental #FreeBSD system which was installed with #pkg from the freebsd-base repository. The FreeBSD-set-minimal, FreeBSD-set-kernel plus a few other firmware packages were installed. The system boots and all works good as usual. But I found #sysrc is no where to find, pkg search sysrc gives py311-ansible-sysrc which does not seem right, freshports reports it is not in 15 but I have it in another system installed using the traditional method. Is it coming from FreeBSD-set-base itself? The the new #pkgbase world, how do I suppose to search where does each utility comes from?

UPDATE It seems to be psm(4) PS/2 mice which obviously doesn't exist on my system so nothing to worry about then.

Development of my personal FreeBSD installer keeps moving forward!

Lots of new ideas and features are currently in the works: the out-of-the-box GUI experience, completion of the Simple and Expert installation modes, automatic hardware detection and configuration (now also GPU support as well).

Every now and then when I come back to use my daily driver running #Debian #Linux, I got surprised why #apt still does not provided short-formed commands like #pkg in #FreeBSD and #pkgin in #NetBSD do such as:

Stumped upon same situation as two days ago where I found it extremely hard to to find where a #FreeBSD base utility comes from using a #pkgbase system. It was the sysrc utiity last weekend, and today mixer. They are there in the manual pages, in source code, but no easy way to find out where they end up in FreeBSD-xxx packages. Luckily when I used enough keywords Google Gemini actually was capable to point me to the FreeBSD-sound package.

Still puzzled by my #ThinkPad running #FreeBSD 15.1-RELEASE-p1 as if I run doas poweroff or doas shutdown -p now or even doas reboot or doas shutdown -r now it will do as expected. But if I leave my laptop for say 10-30 minutes without any screen lockers it will start to reboot or poweroff and unmount geli then start detaching devices like USB and it then hangs indefinitely.
It used to work in 15 I'm sure it did as I always poweroff at night. I have submitted a bug but I can for the life of me figure this out as it doesn't make sense ????
What difference would leaving the laptop running for an hour make to a shutdown or reboot command? I'm using efi too and everything seems fine I think??
Any suggestions glady accepted.

Spent the morning fixing my MangoWM scripts as they changed how their IPC command mmsg works. Which may sound annoying but it actually improves what can be done via IPC now.

OK A bit late but I have successfully converted one of my test thin jails to pkgbase using pkgbasify and it all works. Only another 7 working jails to do and the host Beastie of course. So if I do decide to fully go for it tonight, You'll know what's wrong if I suddenly drop offline. 🤣
