British comedian Michael McIntyre has a bit in which he claims that any English word can be used to describe being drunk. Now, two German linguists have tested the claim. "It is highly surprising that drunkonyms are still under-researched from a linguistic perspective," the authors wrote in their new paper, which was published in the Yearbook of the German Cognitive Linguistics Association. @arstechnica's @JenLucPiquant has the TL;DR.
The original research paper lists 546 synonyms for drunkenness. We want to know which of these four did NOT appear.

There are massive differences in the GHG emissions of different foods & "local" isn't always best for the environment.

"If everything you know is passed through word of mouth and from generation to generation—if the land and olive trees are gone, and the places that birthed recipes and stories are gone—stories are all that’s left."

Cookbook author Laila El-Haddad's aunt, An'am Dalloul, known in her family as Khalto Um Hani, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City last November. For Saveur, El-Haddad honors the memory of the woman who taught her to cook, and shares a recipe for sumagiyya — lamb stew. "With Ramadan fast approaching, and with no end in sight to the bombardment, it feels like I am the torchbearer now, the family’s keeper of treasured recipes," she says. "Like Um Hani, I will cook and I will teach, connecting the next generation of Palestinians to our homeland."
This is a selection of the thousands of native potato varieties that grow in Peru. What is even more interesting is that agronomists are looking to the ancestral knowledge of Peruvian farmers to identify genetic strains that can resist climate change.

Vegan cheese has a horrible reputation, but engineer Magi Richani, founder of Nobell Foods in San Francisco, and microbiologist Morgan Mitchell, creator of Green Goddess Fromagerie in Guelph, Ontario, say they've nailed it. The Walrus's Nicole Schmidt looked into why it's so tricky to develop dairy-free cheese, and tried a few. It's still a topic of discussion whether you can call a non-dairy item "cheese." What do you reckon?

I'm #ActuallyAutistic and I know food preparation is difficult for many folks in the community.
But learning to feed yourself is a skill that has cascading effects (I get severely depressed if I don't feed myself food I like). Not to mention, not everyone has the $$ for takeout
I've been sending this 'sad bastards cookbook' to everyone https://archive.org/details/sad-bastards-last

We will not meaningfully tackle #ClimateChange unless we change the global #food system.
Momofuku is like the Trader Joe’s of East Asian food. They get to position themselves as experts by packaging cultural foods as an object of consumption, in an accessible culture to consume but never really learn about. Then they rip off and send legal letters to smaller Asian cos who dare to call themselves things like ‘chilli crunch’. David Chang can go suck a bag of balls. Their instant noodles are also repackaged Taiwanese noodle products btw.

The U.S. National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (aka Big Hot Dog) puts out a figure each year claiming to be the number of hot dogs an American eats annually and it's big. 70 hot dogs a year — not including bratwursts, sausages, veggie dogs, or pigs-in-blankets! Defector's Kelsey McKinney wrote this exhaustive investigation on where the heck this number comes from. To augment her research, fediverse-style, we want to know roughly how many hot dogs you personally consume a year. Story may be paywalled.

A whole lotta these made the base for my spaghetti sauce. Blanching and peeling took a long time. The pot began cooking a few hours ago and I just added in the pressure cooked carrots, celery, onion, green pepper, fresh basil and garlic. Another hour at a low simmer and then puree time. I freeze 2 cups at a time in ziplock bags flat. That way I can thaw the right amount quickly. Happy time. #Tomatoes #Vegetables #Food
Speaking of tofu, Pailin from Hot Thai Kitchen has a banger tofu episode in which she lets loose several tofu rants I agree with:
- in most of Asia, tofu isn’t a meat alternative
- tofu is often cooked with non veg items
- people who try to ‘make it like chicken / steak’ have no idea what they’re doing
- if you think tofu is horrible, I’m sorry you’ve not had great tofu and tofu dishes
It’s #EarthDay & I’m giving a talk all about the global food system & its impact on the environment.
The agricultural sector is one of the most significant + immediately scalable places to have impact.
Since my talk isn’t public, here’s a great piece from @globalecoguy & the good folks at Project Drawdown. https://drawdown.org/news/insights/how-food-and-farming-will-determine-the-fate-of-planet-earth

This photo was sent my way by someone who knows I work in #food security. I don’t know where it was taken or who deserves credit. (The tickets appear to name a pub).
But I’d sure love to see this kindness replicated. Widely. It’s critically needed & warms my heart. ❤️
More soy toots: when you buy soy sauce look at the ingredient list and label.
If it has ‘hydrolyzed soy protein’, it’ll be roughly the same quality as ‘cheap Chinese restaurant takeout soy sauce packets’. Soy sauce made from chemical processes. It doesn’t taste good to me and is usually amped up with sugar.
If it just says ‘soy beans’, and the label says ‘naturally brewed’ or ‘naturally fermented’ or ‘first draw soy sauce’ it will be pretty good.
If you think money doesn’t buy happiness, you haven’t found your favorite taco truck.
