Can anyone recommend a book about autism that would aid a very bright, newly diagnosed autistic 8-year-old girl in her quest for self-understanding? This description fits my wife's grandniece, who recently received her formal diagnosis.

My first reaction was that she would be able to understand a book written for adults, like #NeuroTribes. And as far as intellectual comprehension goes, that might be true. But her emotional maturity is likely still to be approximately what would be expected from her age; and books on autism for adults usually have a LOT to say about the inhumanity of neurotypicals to autistics. I doubt that this little girl needs to hear right now about Ivar #Lovaas, the Judge Rotenberg Center, the #mindblindness theory, institutionalization, parents mourning their living autistic children, #filicide, and similar horrors.

So can anyone recommend a book on autism that is suited to the needs of autistic children, and steers clear of the chamber of horrors?
