Remember when the web was fun? @cwebber does, and she reminded users of that in her keynote speech at last week's FediForum, in which she talked about how the fediverse can't succeed without joy. Here's @ricmac's writeup of the event, which included presentations from @_elena, @quillmatiq, @mike, @michael, @benpate and more.

Let's document interactions between Mobilizon and other fediverse softwares. Documentation is up to date with Mastodon and Gancio (https://docs.mobilizon.org/6.%20Fediverse/1.protocol/) but inputs regarding Peertube and Pixelfed are missing (at least). If you use Mobilizon together with Peertube or Pixelfed or any fediverse other software, we're very interested in your experience. #fediverse

In an effort to create and provide better articles on my blog, especially those related to cybersecurity and tech, I want to get your feedback on what type of articles y’all would like to see.

So, let me know below the types, series, etc. that I can write about.

Feel free to share to help spread across the #fediverse.

Finally started working on the 6.2 refactor of @tootsdk

I think this warrants making me a fediverse app ... you know, for debugging purposes :D

As a pacifist, what I love most about the Fediverse is how it feels like a shared search for peace. We have Caturday, when everyone posts cat pictures every Saturday. There's Mosstodon, which is all about sharing beautiful photos of moss and nature. And we have SilentSunday, where people post calm outdoor and nature photos. Even with all the chaos in the world, the Fediverse has a way of calming my mind.

PieFed 1.6 is released - pronouns, private communities, quote posts and much more

A big thank you to those who contributed to making this release, translating, writing documentation, providing emotional support and promoting PieFed! None of this would happen without you all.

New hotness

Pronouns - when you put pronouns into Extra Fields on your profile that is used as a flair in all communities where you haven’t set a flair yet
Private communities - no federation, only certain roles (depends on the community) can invite new people. Posts inside are only visible to members.
Mastodon can now quote-boost PieFed posts
Plain http web UI (no SSL required) with SSL used during federation - see http://retro.piefed.com
Downvotes can be turned off completely in a community, not just instance-wide
Admins can sticky a post on the home page, not just mods in their communities
Auto-delete of replies on remote instances when reply author has been blocked by parent content author (only works in PieFed communities due to a ActivityPub limitation)
On home page when showing number of replies a post has, calculate the sum of the replies on all cross-posts and display that
New users can only do 3 posts in their first 24h, to reduce floods of posts by that guy who keeps deleting his accounts and making new ones

More good stuff

Improve emoji federation compatibility
Change order of emoji in picker to present most-used ones first
Daily time limit on usage to help people use PieFed less (released in 1.5.2)
A way to report posts that need to be tagged as AI generated
Better accessibility
Improved handling of bold and italics in markdown parsing
Don’t accept votes from people the author has blocked
Admins can resend email address verification email
Admins can add notes to instances to keep track of defederation reasons, etc
Search form has been simplified
Option for admins to disable the em-dash detector
Multiple minor bugfixes and security enhancements

To upgrade from 1.5.x

git pull
git checkout v1.6.x

At this point you might see an error message about a merge conflict with compose.yaml. To preserve your custom compose.yaml you will need to copy it somewhere else, then git checkout compose.yaml then git pull again. This time the pull will succeed so after that copy your custom compose.yaml it back, overwriting the one from git.

Then,

./deploy.sh or ./deploy-docker.sh

If you had to do the compose.yaml fix up earlier then you might want to compare what you have with https://codeberg.org/rimu/pyfedi/src/branch/main/compose.yaml and manually copy and paste some improvements in particular the command: part of the db container which tunes postgresql for performance. Adjust the numbers for your system.

This time the database migrations will not take long.

Blogbeitrag: Die vergangenen Wochen waren sehr aufwühlend.

I joined #mastodon on New Year’s Day, with no idea what to expect

I found somewhere totally different to other social media. No ads, no algorithm, and a massive number of really nice people. Thank you all for making me feel welcome and comfortable in this unique place you call the #fediverse

But the best part is how much you all like cats (because me too)

Here’s Molly, sitting between my knees and staring at me until I give her treats

Hello #Fediverse! 👋

I’m currently working on a new project: cupertino.social - a future home for the Apple community here on the decentralized web.

I’m building this because I believe we need a space that combines the elegance of the Apple ecosystem with the ethical soul of the Fediverse. A place for those who love the "Unix heart" of their devices and value privacy as a fundamental right.

We are currently "under construction," fine-tuning the infrastructure (strictly European-hosted and independent!) to ensure a smooth, clean, and respectful experience.

Stay tuned for the official launch post soon. I can’t wait to share this journey with you all.

Kinda weird hearing about Threads devs talking at Fediverse House considering that they promised full federation by the end of 2024 and we're almost through the first quarter of 2025 and we don't seem any closer to that promise.

Those who were there, did they give an update on when they plan on allowing replies and such?

Feels like they're dropping the ball big time.
