<p>I was really excited for the <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#Fediverse</a> in 2024 and I think that feeling has borne out. Projects have released or started in earnest but so did the influenze of facebook, a long-term genocide and queer violence supporter who have this week changed their terms to expressly permit queerphobic and other vicious harms.</p>

<p>For the new kids joining Mastodon, let me share a common mistake I see with new users: </p><p>"Mastodon sucks. There is no timeline. It's like a tiny echo chamber here"</p><p>What's the mistake you ask? They invariably only follow a few dozen people.</p><p>This is what you need to understand about federated platforms like Mastodon: the server only pulls in data from people you follow! So, go out and follow some more people already.</p><p>You can also follow hashtags btw. This is great for getting more posts in your feed on subjects that interest you. Go and use hashtags in your own posts too of course.</p><p><a href="/tags/feditips/" rel="tag">#feditips</a> <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#fediverse</a></p>
<p>Starting to feel like this 2025 Influx of users is much larger than 2022 Influx of users. New users come in huge waves. Many of them also seem to genuinely like Mastodon according to the feedback. In 2022 many tried, soon gave up and left to Bluesky or back to X. Today, many have even deleted their commercial accounts and settled here.</p><p>I like this new development of things. Seeing new faces and more cat photos bring me so much joy. Thanks for being here. <p>I like the idea of <a href="/tags/surf/" rel="tag">#Surf</a> (the app, not the sport)<br><br>Unfortunately, all the feeds are very US-centric right now with no way to mute what I don't care about.
