The main difference is that the submission form allows you to anonymise yourself and have the request circulate through <span class="h-card"><a href="https://mutualaidspace.org/author/comrade/" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>comrade</span></a></span> instead of your own social media account.</p><p>The form is also useful if you do not have a Fediverse profile, or if you simply do not have many followers there. Your request does not depend entirely on the size of your own social network to reach people, because mutualaidspace.org has its own amplification infrastructure.</p><p>mutualaidspace.org does not retain your email address or other contact information. The email address entered into the form is only used to notify you when the post is automatically taken down after one week.</p><p>A Fediverse profile is already a social media profile where you can separate yourself from your IRL identity. But when asking the general public on the worldwide web for solidarity and material support, mutual aid seekers are often among the people in the most vulnerable position online. They may still go out of their way to reveal who they are, their circumstances, and other personal information because asking strangers for support often comes with pressure to prove that the need is real.</p><p>The form does not remove that reality, but it provides a semblance of a barrier between the mutual aid seeker, their own social media profile on the Fediverse, and general netizens. The request can still travel through the Fediverse and the wider web without necessarily making the mutual aid seeker's own social media identity the account being circulated alongside it.</p><p>It functions mainly as an amplifier, so please do not use the form as the only place where you put your mutual aid request. <p>Subject: More on Nicolium<br>For: <a href="/tags/selfhosting/" rel="tag">#selfhosting</a> and/or <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#Fediverse</a> power users</p><p>I've tested and tweaked <a href="/tags/nicolium/" rel="tag">#Nicolium</a>, a front end for Pleroma and other Fediverse back ends. With the tweaks in place, it works well for me. I'll share some of them in patch form at a later date.</p><p>Features include hashtag follow, emoji reactions, borders on focused posts, Markdown, WYSIWYG editor, real-time chat, draft posts, URL cleaning, direct messages, enhanced interaction policies, theme editor with export support, image ALT-text button, profile avatars inline next to mentions, and different ways to handle load or display of new posts.</p><p>There is also a multi-column Deck feature, but that is more of a work in progress.</p><p>The attached screenshot shows what my tweaked Nicolium presently looks like. The panel at the top is one of the tweaks. I added it to hold link buttons for different purposes.</p><p>To see a larger copy, in Chromium or Firefox derivatives, left-click on the image. To see a full-size copy, right-click on the image, select Open in New Window, and resize the new window.</p><p>Trick for advanced users:</p><p>The screenshot shows a /tags/ URL in the location bar. FYI The combination of Pleroma [as back end] and Soapbox or Nicolium [as front end] displays URLs of this type in response to hashtag operations, but the URLs don't work if you reuse them.</p><p>If you encounter this issue, URLs of this type can be made to work by adding the following location block before other location blocks in your "nginx" or "angie" server ".conf" file:</p><p>location ~ ^/tags/(.*)$ { return 301 /tag/$1;}</p>

<p>This is the first genuinely operational littleFedi instance.</p><p>It has been online since 1st July, is single-user (just me), and runs on a Raspberry Pi Zero W powered by NetBSD, directly on its SD card.</p><p>It consumes just under 1W.</p><p>Its database is this size:</p><p>-rw------- 1 little wheel 109289472 Aug 26 15:14 littlefedi.db</p><p>That is, just a little over 100 MB. Yes, MB.</p><p>Its average CPU load is extremely low.</p><p>It is perfectly usable both from the web interface and from Mastodon API apps.</p><p>I have 179 followers and 169 followings, and it doesn't bat an eye.</p><p>I promise myself to use it more, and I will.</p><p>You don't need Big Tech to communicate with others.</p><p>You don't need an expensive data center to exist online.</p><p>Because we are people, and the bits are just extensions of our voice.</p><p>EDIT: littleFedi allows to transform posts into blog posts, having its own SSG (Static Site Generator).
