1/ Announcement: So today being a news day I might as well announce that the team at TheCanadian.Social has officially taken ownership of https://journa.host and https://newsie.social. We have also moved these instances to our facilities in Canada. These are two important instances hosting a large portion of the fediverse's journalism accounts. We felt it important to keep them going as the previous stewards were considering shutting them down. #fediverse #fediadmin #journalists

Rejoice and praise your chosen deities, for #ThePlaylist has once more risen like a nice dough for your collective enjoyment.

This week's theme was:

and you fine #Fediverse folks picked some absolute bangers.

You know what? Whenever people may ask me why I heart #Mastodon big time and why I'm no longer interested in traditional enshittified #SocialMedia tools, I'm going to start sharing this fabulous blog post by @timbray that pretty much nails it, as far as I am concerned.

In fact, for those folks who were using Twitter circa 2006 to 2010 it's a lovely trip down the memory lane of what #Web20 promised back then 👌🏻😎

I had an interesting conversation on here recently that made me realize that maybe not everyone who uses Mastodon knows that you can use filters as a way to add content warning to other people's posts?

We're pleased to announce that #Hollo has been included in the Nivenly Fediverse Security Fund program!

The @nivenly Foundation has launched a security bounty fund to support contributors who identify and help fix #security vulnerabilities in popular #fediverse software. Both Hollo and @fedify are among the selected projects that meet their responsible security disclosure requirements.

This program will run from April–September 2025, with bounties of $250–$500 USD for high and critical security vulnerabilities.

We're honored to be recognized alongside other established fediverse projects like Mastodon, Misskey, and Lemmy. This further encourages our commitment to maintaining strong security practices.

If you're interested in contributing to Hollo's security, please follow our responsible disclosure process outlined in our SECURITY.md file.

Linux communities beware of #PewDiePie fans

Regardless of PewDiePie’s personal #politics (which clearly, at the very least are problematic), it is fairly well known by anyone who has been following him for any number of years that the vast majority of his fan base are enthusiastic fascists.

Now #PewDiePie , who’s content centers around PC gaming and Windows, has decided to switch to #Linux and published a video encouraging his followers to do the same. This means a very large number of his #fascist fan base is going to be switching to Linux.

Now many Linux communities are going to be forced to more explicitly choose their politics. Like the parable of the Nazi bar, if the community remains politically neutral, it will become fascist in short order.

A few things to be wary of:

• People asking you not to be “too political” or to “focus on the technology, not the politics” is a classic and highly effective fascist ruse to get moderators to lighten up on fascist elements posting in their community.
• People complaining about free speech rights. The #Internet and the #Fediverse is already a domain where people can speak freely about their politics by running their own server and building their own community with few to no government constraints. You don’t need to compromise on whether fascists have the right to free speech in your community.
• Arguments over your code of conduct (CC) and “safe spaces.” Keep them up-to-date. Research other people’s CCs, learn about the history of why these CCs came to be, learn about what the function of each clause of the code is included and phrased the way it is. These were usually designed to make explicit the fact that a community wants to be a safe space where underprivileged people can feel comfortable expressing themselves, and it is very easy to make people afraid to express themselves. Fascists understand these CCs and the concept of “safe spaces” were explicitly designed to exclude them, and often attack these ideas.

Raphus.social is a Mastodon server for bringing together open minded people interested in technology, open source, games, and other general geekery. (In case you are wondering, Raphus is the Latin for the dodo bird.)

What to learn more about the #fediverse and #ActivityPub? This tutorial (https://fedify.dev/tutorial/microblog) from @fedify is a really good starter. It explains how to implement a really simple #federated server and see how communication exchange are done with AP.

Dear friends of the #Fediverse,
tomorrow afternoon (April 28, 2025, at 18:00 CEST) I will have the honor of being a guest on the Fireside Fedi Show!
We will talk about FediMeteo and, more generally, about the Fediverse.

For those who would like to listen, either live or later, you can find the link and more details here:

#FediMeteo #FediMeteoInterviews

FediMeteo got a solid upgrade today 🌤️

From now on, forecasts are richer, clearer, and a bit smarter, without losing the familiar, readable style.

You will now see more complete current conditions at a glance: feels-like temperature, humidity, pressure, visibility, UV index, and wind gusts, all grouped in a dedicated Details section. Sunrise and sunset times for the current day are also included.

The wind line is back in focus, clearly highlighted for current conditions, and gusts are shown separately using 💨 emoji so they are easy to spot and not confused with average wind.

Pressure is no longer just a number: FediMeteo now shows a real pressure trend over the last few hours, telling you if it is rising, falling, or staying stable.

A new Warnings section has been added. When relevant, the bot will automatically flag things like:

• extreme feels-like temperatures, hot or cold
• high UV levels
• poor air quality
• thunderstorms
• heavy rain likely
• strong winds or gusts

Hourly forecasts remain at 12 hours, but now include pressure too, which makes short-term weather changes easier to read and anticipate.

Everything is fully localised. Labels like “feels like”, section titles, and weather descriptions are consistent across languages, and all weather conditions are now covered everywhere.

In short: same FediMeteo you are used to, but with more context, clearer signals, and fewer surprises.

These changes will start appearing with the next forecast update.
