HUGE thanks to @robb for writing a clear, easy-to-follow #guide on how to enable #Fediverse author attribution on blogs/websites - so that it will show up under the link card: https://rknight.me/blog/setting-up-mastodon-author-tags/

Forward-thinking journalists are not letting the “media apocalypse” happen to them. Instead, they’re doing the work that arguably has been most critical all along: building direct connections with their readers. @404mediaco's @jasonkoebler and @ProPublica's @ben join fediverse futurist @mike for a conversation about the discovery and sustainability of quality journalism.

There is a language general setting where you can define which languages you want to read primarily in #Mastodon.
The problem is: nobody cares! Nobody seems to set up their account properly and tell which language they are using.
The result: the language filter doesn't work, and the stream is crowded with so many people writing in languages one can't read.
I am looking at you, east-asian accounts flooding the #fediverse!
It's no fun at all ...
Continuing to get cancelled on the #Fediverse. lmao what the hell is going on??

So I've been running my own #Snac instance for the past week and I have to say that I'm actually loving it. It hardly takes up any resources and the inbuilt web interface is easily configurable with nothing more than #CSS .
There are some things that folk used to running #Mastodon might not like. For example it does not show any follower or following numbers to any instances. So people using Mastodon will see 0 followers and 0 following even though those Snac uses may have 100's of followers .
You do get a people tab on the snac interface that is just a list divided into people following you and people you follow but no numbers. This is an intentional design feature by the author @grunfink who stated.

I haven't implemented a simple count of following / followers on purpose; I consider all metrics in network media inherently toxic, because it's a way of comparing the relative success of people. This is also why, as seen from other Fediverse implementations, snac accounts always report 0 / 0 connections. Also not all features work with android / iOS apps but most of the essentials do. I occasionally use #Tusky when I'm not just using the web interface for Snac which I just find easier. I think I will be staying with this fantastic lightweight piece of software and look forward to see what new features get added in the future. A wish would be to have a way of importing followers from Mastodon to Snac, which I think the dev is working on at the moment. Oh and I nearly forgot to say that you can import the CSV file of people that you are following through the command line and it's fairly simple to do too. I'd 100% recommended giving Snac a try if you're looking for a no nonsene lightweight #Fediverse instance.

In case you missed it, there's a website that makes it as easy as possible to join Mastodon (and other Fedi platforms):
The featured general server changes regularly, and for people who want choice there's a full list of over 100 servers sorted into categories.
All of the servers are listed with permission of their admins, and promise to comply with specific standards of moderation and technical reliability at https://fedi.garden/about-this-site
According to @tchambers's My 2026 Open Social Web Predictions:
Fedify will power the federation layer for at least one mid-sized social platform (500K+ users) that adds ActivityPub support in 2026. The “build vs. buy” calculation for federation shifts decisively toward “just use Fedify.”
We're honored by this recognition and will keep working hard to make #ActivityPub adoption easier for everyone. Thank you, Tim!
(o meme "this is fine"). Porém, não vão ficar sabendo disso.
, o mais comum na nossa querida Web Social federada, permanece sem deixar publicar Markdown, embora exiba o de terceiros.
<p>This is our biggest release yet, including more finished tasks than any of our previous ones. Below is a summary of the highlights: </p>
<h3>What’s new</h3>
<p><a href="https://piefed.social/c/piefed_meta/p/1523426/labelling-or-hiding-ai-generated-content" rel="nofollow ugc" target="_blank">Posts & communities can be labelled as AI-generated</a> and people can choose to hide all posts tagged that way. Very similar to how NSFW works. </p>
<p><a href="https://piefed.social/c/piefed_meta/p/1523157/what-if-stack-overflow-except-federated" rel="nofollow ugc" target="_blank">Comments can be marked as an Answer</a>, like on StackOverflow. </p>
<p><a href="https://piefed.social/c/piefed_api/p/1596518/emoji-reactions-in-the-piefed-api" rel="nofollow ugc" target="_blank">React to posts and comments with an emoji</a>. </p>
<p>Hide an individual post from yourself, without blocking the author. </p>
<p>PieFed is now in the Yunohost app store, making initial setup easier. </p>
<p>When banned from a remote instance you cannot make local-only posts in their communities. </p>
<p>Honeypot to automatically IP ban badly-behaved crawlers. </p>
<p><a href="https://lemmy-federate.com" rel="nofollow ugc" target="_blank">https://lemmy-federate.com</a> integration, making PieFed communities get more exposure. </p>
<p>“Share on Mastodon” menu item on posts. </p>
<p>Vastly improve docs for new developers, see <a href="https://codeberg.org/rimu/pyfedi/src/branch/main/docs/developer_docs" rel="nofollow ugc" target="_blank">https://codeberg.org/rimu/pyfedi/src/branch/main/docs/developer_docs</a>. </p>
<p>Language selection is more visible during post creation. </p>
<p>Tag clouds can also be viewed as a list of tags. </p>
<p>View post/comment markdown. </p>
<p>Bot accounts are not included in community statistics. </p>
<p>Footnote support in markdown. </p>
<p>Polish translation. </p>
<p>Better HTTP caching, which <a href="https://join.piefed.social/2025/11/22/reducing-piefeds-dependence-on-cloudflare/" rel="nofollow ugc" target="_blank">reduces dependence on Cloudflare</a>. </p>
<h3>Bugs</h3>
<p>Passkey fixes. </p>
<p>Polls can now have up to 15 options. </p>
<p>User profile performance improved. </p>
<p>Don’t allow bypassing minimum username length and post title with whitespace. </p>
<p>Polls and Events can no longer be posted into Lemmy communities. </p>
<h3>API</h3>
<p>Additional user settings can be set through the api, including Extra Fields. </p>
<p>Fetch url metadata. </p>
<p>Sort comments by controversial. </p>
<p>Comment search now works. </p>
<p>Hashtags. </p>
<p>Events. </p>
<p>Polls. </p>
<p>Emoji reactions on posts and comments. </p>
<p>See <a href="https://piefed.social/c/piefed_api" rel="nofollow ugc" target="_blank">https://piefed.social/c/piefed_api</a> for more details. </p>
<h3>To upgrade</h3>
<p>To upgrade from 1.3.x: </p>
<pre><code>git pull
git checkout v1.4.x
./deploy.sh or ./deploy-docker.sh
</code></pre>
<p>There is a big database migration that will take a few minutes to run. How long will vary depending on how old your instance is - older instances will have more content to process. It took ~25 minutes on piefed.social so expect it to be less than that. </p>
<h3>Donations</h3>
<p>PieFed is free and open-source software while operating without any advertising, monetization, or reliance on venture capital. Your donations are vital in supporting the PieFed development effort, allowing us to expand and enhance PieFed with new features. </p>
<p>Donations can be made via <a href="https://www.patreon.com/PieFed" rel="nofollow ugc" target="_blank">Patreon</a>, <a href="https://liberapay.com/PieFed/" rel="nofollow ugc" target="_blank">Liberapay</a> or <a href="https://ko-fi.com/piefed" rel="nofollow ugc" target="_blank">Ko-fi</a>.</p>
If they can’t see what we say, it’s not #federation.
If they can’t follow us, it’s not federation.
If it requires account duplication, it’s not federation.
@mosseri and the rest of you. #Threads, #bluesky, i’m talking to you. But you shut your ears, because all these tricks are ones you need. To continue your data-thieving business model.
The #GreatDataHeist of 2024, that’s you. Trying to do it to us, candidly, but I pay my dues in money, not privacy.
