I wanted to capture some thoughts while they were fresh, even though they might not be fully formed.</p><p>HOPE (Hackers On Planet Earth) is a technology and information security conference sponsored by <a href="https://www.2600.com" rel="nofollow">2600 Magazine</a>. The SWF had two points of presence at the event this year: I gave <a href="https://schedule.hope.net/hope16/talk/CWW9XA/" rel="nofollow">an hour-long talk about the Fediverse</a> which was streamed live. We also hosted the <a href="https://schedule.hope.net/hope16/talk/9PWVMF/" rel="nofollow">Fediverse Village</a>, which turned out to be mostly a booth in the non-profits area of the vendors floor.</p><p>We had people streaming by all day long Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I had thought the Village was going to be more like a hang-out room, so I was caught off guard on prep, but I put out all the ActivityPub and Social Web Foundation stickers I had, covers for the ActivityPub book, and a stack of CoSocial.ca stickers to boot. But there was a definite stone soup aspect to the village area: people brought by schwag for Fediverse software like WriteFreely, instances like GardenState.social and Masto.nyc, and projects like DWeb.</p><p>I’d hoped to have more structured discussions, including a meetup for Fediverse governance and a hackathon. But it turned out to be a lot more loosey-goosey than I expected, and most of the weekend was spent talking to other Fediverse fans, and helping people who came up to the booth to ask about the Fediverse.</p><p>I think I expected because of the level of technical expertise that was shown at the event that we’d be speaking to only true believers. But there were many people there who hadn’t heard of the Fediverse, and who were excited to try it out. One thing that struck me that was an advantage for these people over commercial social networks was the option to get out from under the “real names” policies of many platforms. It’s hard to remember that the alternative to the Fediverse that most people are familiar with are services that require a real-looking legal name to be used, and force you to send a scan of a government ID if they’re at all suspicious.</p><p>The other thing that struck me was how many people came to the booth saying that they’d registered for a Mastodon account at some point, and were really excited to get it reactivated, but forgot which server it was on and didn’t want to register for another. I think that’s a real pain point for a lot of people — and one we should do better at solving.</p><p>I plan to come back to HOPE next year. I’d love to have more schwag for Fediverse software, services, and platforms. I’d like to have a way to get people signed up and onboarded for the Fediverse right at the table. And I’d like to have some more formal get-together events. There are spaces to meet at HOPE if you know how to set it up — I’m going to try to use them better next time.</p><p>Thanks to everyone who came to the Fediverse Village, my talk, or just talked to me around the HOPE event. I was energised by the people and the technology that was happening, and I look forward to engaging again.</p>

CrowdBucks is a new payment system for the Fediverse
<p>This was initially demoed at FediCon 2025, but CrowdBucks is an open source, self-hostable fundraising system that allows people to financially support one another. You use your existing Fediverse account to hold a fundraiser, and can also donate to other people’s fundraisers as well. The form factor is kind of similar to Kickstarter or Patreon.</p>

<p>Folks, this is a general Gaza Verified message.</p><p>Please note that while we know the unconscionable situation people in Gaza are having to go through, we are also seeing a rise (from a small number of people) of mass tagging of people in messages and unsolicited direct messages.</p><p>To our friends and families in Gaza Verified: this is against the rules of almost every server, including the one your account is on and it will get your account limited or suspended. It is also against our rules (see <a href="https://gaza-verified.org/guide/" rel="nofollow"><span class="invisible">https://</span>gaza-verified.org/guide/</a> or, in Palestinian Arabic: <a href="https://gaza-verified.org/guide-arabic/" rel="nofollow" class="ellipsis" title="gaza-verified.org/guide-arabic/"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">gaza-verified.org/guide-arabic</span><span class="invisible">/</span></a>) as we don’t want your accounts to get limited/suspended.</p><p>If your account is suspended by your server for no reason or as discrimination for who you are, we will challenge that and, if necessary, help you find a new server (see our friendly servers list in the guide).</p><p>And we have also worked with some of you to help explain the rules and advocate on your behalf when your accounts were suspended for mass tagging or unsolicited direct messages. </p><p>However, with a small number of accounts, we have seen the same behaviour continue the moment the account is reinstated.</p><p>In such situations, we cannot help you further. And we will not verify any new accounts you create to avoid these suspensions.</p><p>The goal of Gaza Verified from the start was to ensure that Mastodon and the fediverse was a safe space for our Palestinian friends and, with the help of many server admins, I believe we have, for the most part, succeeded in creating a space where Palestinians are respected and valued. But this is a two-way street. It is also important that the people here who care and want to help are not constantly subjected to targeted messages imploring them to help. Many of those who help are not well off themselves and they help when and how they can.</p><p>The best thing about Mastodon and the fediverse is that it is a place where you can build genuine friendships. Everything else will flow from this.</p><p>So I beg our friends in Gaza to see the long-term value of being part of a community that cares and hopefully talking to one another and helping ensure that a very small number of accounts doesn’t jeopardise that for everyone for short-term gain.</p><p>To our friends and families in Gaza, I do not presume to tell you how to use Mastodon or the fediverse but here are some of my thoughts based on what I’ve seen in the past half-year of Gaza Verified’s existence:</p><p>1. Please don’t see this as a competition with each other. We all know that everyone who is in Gaza needs help.</p><p>2. Please try and make genuine connections with people here. Share your everyday experiences. People will follow you and they will engage with you. And from that, some of them will no doubt also help you.</p><p>3. Please don’t target messages that try to guilt people who have helped in the past to help again. If they can help, they will. Please remember that they may not be in the best financial situation either.</p><p>For those of you reading who want to know how they can help, there are three main ways:</p><p>1. Check out the list of Gaza Verified accounts at <a href="https://gaza-verified.org/donate" rel="nofollow"><span class="invisible">https://</span>gaza-verified.org/donate</a> (ranked by those who raised the least in the past week).</p><p>2. Perhaps pick someone and try and organise monthly patronages for them so they can have a certain amount of money coming in every month (call it a universal basic income, if you will, or crowdfunded income redistribution, etc.) so they can pay their rent and/or basic necessities. We just successfully did that for Aseel, one of our Gaza Verified team members, where 17 patrons, including me, are paying her family’s rent. If there was more of this, there would be less need for these families, who are facing genocide and famine, to keep asking for donations.</p><p>3. If you are mass tagged in a message or if you receive unsolicited direct messages, please either contact <span class="h-card"><a href="https://mastodon.ar.al/@gazaverified" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>gazaverified</span></a></span> or mute the person in question but please don’t report them if you can. Please remember that our friends in Gaza are facing genocide and the possibility of another famine. Muting them will stop them from contacting you without jeopardising their ability to provide for their family. First, it looks a bit strange. HTML attributes, tags and elements wrapped in C? But it's quick! And <span class="h-card"><a href="https://comam.es/snac/grunfink" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>grunfink</span></a></span> had a great idea of simplifying it with the helper functions to even close them again. The more I adjusted all the things in <a href="/tags/snac/" rel="tag">#snac</a> / <a href="/tags/snac2/" rel="tag">#snac2</a> to my personal needs, the closer I had a look to the code base after being absent to snac for almost a bit more than a year.
