Since #Firefish is becoming unmaintained, I need to find new fedi instance software. My choices as I understand them:
- Some similar Misskey fork such as #Sharkey, #Iceshrimp (but they're ongoing a rewrite?), something else..? Advantage is that in theory I can migrate my current instance without having to create a new fedi identity. But the risk is that the next fork will also become unmaintained due to lack of developers.
- #Akkoma. It's faster and lighter than #Mastodon, but I don't like the default UI and would use the Glitch-soc multi-column UI. I don't know if that works without issues on it, but it seems to be bundled in? Also don't know how active Akkoma is.
- Mastodon. It's apparently heavy to run (no experience), but overwhelmingly the most supported and the most likely to be maintained into the future. Downside (which Akkoma also has) is that I need to create a new fedi identity, as apparently other instances won't accept me just switching to Mastodon and keeping the same identity. That would be some hassle, especially as my old Fosstodon/GenServer.social accounts point to my current identity, which would disappear (maybe I could set up a redirect with Caddy).
- GoToSocial. This is very unknown to me, and it doesn't come with a UI?
- Something else?

Urgent Warning for Fedi Admins
We've discovered an ongoing Denial-of-Service attack against Misskey-based instances. The attacks exploit a zero-day vulnerability impacting Misskey, Sharkey, IceShrimp, and other related software. Patches are in progress and will be released ASAP. We encourage all admins to update immediately!
Note: this is a different vulnerability from the ones that were recently announced! You should update today and again tomorrow at the scheduled time.
Update: Sharkey version 2024.9.2 has been released with a patch. You can get the update here: https://activitypub.software/TransFem-org/Sharkey/-/releases/2024.9.2

Important question for Sharkey Admins
Hi all! If you own or administrate a Sharkey instance, then I've got an important question for you. Over the last two weeks, have you experienced any unexpected crashes or restarts accompanied by a log message reading: [core] The process is going to exit with code 0?
If so, then please reach out! We're investigating a possible bug that none of our development team can reproduce. It would help us greatly if you could answer the poll below, even/especially if you haven't experienced a crash!
Boosts would be greatly appreciated, and thanks so much in advance!

I have recently created two tools for promoting your favorite fediverse communities. (And you can even use them together!)
The first one lets you create a customizable invitation page with your favorite apps and starter packs (collections will be supported soon!): https://stefanbohacek.com/project/fediverse-invitation/
And also the Join the Fediverse zine, with the last page allowing you to link to your custom invitation.

Hope you will all find these useful!

Question to #FediAdmins #MastoAdmins:
How would you qualify a Mastodon instance that has 10k accounts but only 63 original posts (not counting replies) in a 24 hour span?
Yes, this is a post about theForkiverse.com ... I'm trying to gauge how active it is, what its future may be...
One of its admins / mods (Kevin) hasn't posted anything since January 24th and it's disappointing if this turns out to be another high profile example of a hyped up Fediverse instance that quickly fizzles out 😭
On my end, I've been trying to interact (via my Mastodon account) with people on that instance to make them feel seen and valued.
But the lack of activity by its members and admins is a cause for concern, sigh.
I thought this was only me but then this morning I saw this toot by a member of that instance: https://theforkiverse.com/@NotYours/116147206887032255

Today, an unknown bot swarm started using my name, boosting my posts, and inserting itself into communities I helped create. I treated it like any other potential attack and started defending myself and our communities as best I could. This has taken up more of my day than most malicious bot attacks, because it had the air of legitimacy—despite taking the actions of a threat.
When the owner, @evan ¹, came in with the same justifications as the porn-scrapers and LLM-owners I regularly fight against—repeatedly doubling-down in the face of backlash²—I felt more and more sure of my response.
I now feel justified in calling for a #FediBlock of tags.pub (and probably his other projects), at least until a better opt-in consent model is built into the project.
¹ I'm including his name as he's a public figure associated with Activity Pub, and our whole conversation today is already a public record, but please don't dogpile; just defed or block as you see fit and call it a night (or day—I'm not your mom).

#PSA: Y'all might want to block or defed tags.pub and tagpush.app domain, because they're bot-boosting anything with hashtags.
My recent underwear post has a boost for each hashtag on it, and fuck this bot using my AlicePics tag as a username to boost all my nudes.
People can already follow hashtags, we don't need an *opt-out* bot-swarm to make things more "discoverable".
I don't need *every* server to see my nudes. Just the ones who have my actual, human¹ followers on them.
Edit: the owner of tags.pub suggested we also block the rest of his domains: groups.pub, activitypub.bot, and onepage.pub 🤷🏼♀️

Hey, fediverse admins!
Did you know that you can print a customized version of the Join the Fediverse! zine that links to your community?
It's true!
