Meta’s Engineering team explains in pretty understandable detail what caused everything to go south today.
A pretty good read.

🤭”technical issue”
“#Meta’s platforms, including #Facebook and Instagram, went down for thousands of users on Tuesday, because of what the company called a “technical issue.” The outage was resolved within around two hours.”

Just went to our elderly neighbours to help out with a "digital issue"
Turned out.. they had to accept the new Facebook changes on their phone to keep using it on their iPad
So the iPad was stuck on a screen that said "go to your phone and click accept" that left them in total confusion
So I checked the phone app and ofc no way to accept Had to update the app first, force close and reopen before proceeding
The hell that's called #Facebook
There goes the neighbourhood.

But, yes, please, do federate with them mastodon.social. Because senpai noticed you.

Given the latest news and their overall work, I've updated a list of all #DNS used by #Meta and its trackers : #Facebook, #Instagram, #WhatsApp and all other crap.
Usable with #personalDNSfilter on #Android, if you no longer have an account with them (which you should) and want to block them completely from browsing, I've put all the information you need to set up the list in my Git repository below 👇
I can confidently diagnose #betterhelp as sociopaths.
Promised therapy customers privacy...then gave their mental health info to advertisers.
Victims get less than ten bucks each.
Company made billion+ in revenue last year alone.
In a just society with good privacy laws, they'd face existential civil & criminal consequences.

In case you missed it, June 26 2024 (TODAY in Europe as I write this) is apparently the deadline for #Facebook updating TOS to give itself permission to train AI on your content. In the UK and EU, you can opt out of this. If you have a FB account and haven't looked into this, you'll want to sign into FB on a computer and jump through a few hoops.
You'll likely need access to the email account you use for signing in, FB is going to email you a code to confirm your identity.
MIT Technology Review with opt-out links that apply to the EU and UK: https://www.technologyreview.com/2024/06/14/1093789/how-to-opt-out-of-meta-ai-training/
It might not matter anyway if you're in the US (maybe in some states?) but shouldn't hurt to try. In the US, there is an option to request deletion of data about you that Meta has received from third parties for AI training, for what it's worth.
TL;DR steps: "Settings & Privacy," "Privacy Center," "Other Policies & Articles" dropdown, "How Meta uses information for generative AI...," scroll down to the third from last paragraph, follow the "Learn more and submit requests here" link, fill out the form, submit, get a one-time code in your email, finalize submit. Text I used for the fields at the end of this toot.
Irreverent and irritated steps from Deborah Copaken with screenshots: https://deborahcopaken.substack.com/p/11-steps-to-opt-out-of-metas-data
A bit more coverage from Lifehacker: https://lifehacker.com/tech/opt-out-of-meta-instagram-and-facebook-ai-data-training
Text I used for the third-party data form available in the US:
"I wish to exercise my rights under all relevant Federal and State data protection laws to not have my personal data utilized or made available for generative AI, image processing AI, or any other form of AI or similar training."
Also, if you're using Firefox consider installing the "Facebook Container" add-on by Mozilla - it should limit the ability of Meta to link your identity to sites you visit, though it will also impact your ability to sign into sites using Facebook (which of course has its own risks).
My entire Facebook account (with all my connected pages and groups) was suspended without warning yesterday & my appeal was denied. I shared a post about this on Medium:

Meta has admitted it used all its users’ public posts on its platforms going back to 2007 to train its AI models during an Australian senate inquiry.
The only exception was for users in the European Union who opted out.

Mastodon, honestly, haven't changed much since I joined. It has its own community, and I do realize now that it's impossible for Mastodon to become a Twitter-like community and post Twitter-like posts.
I know, most of you will say: "Of course, because Twitter sucks and you better not post anything like you would on X!", yet my point is, is that Mastodon's posts will never become like posts from other popular platforms.
Mastodon community has nothing to fear for. They don't have to fear that Mastodon is going to die, or that Mastodon will no longer be Mastodon.
Mastodon, to me, feels more like old Facebook + old Twitter combination. Yeah, the old ones that I knew.
Imagine if all your friends were sharing their honest thoughts, sharing their pictures. That's literally my feed on here.
I can't say that Mastodon is a bad place to exist, because I don't think it is. But honestly, Mastodon *fails* as a Twitter alternative, because........it's not meant to be an alternative to Twitter.
Yes, I know what you will say. But, still, Mastodon is better to be recommended as a somewhat alternative to Facebook, rather then as alternative to Twitter.
I just feel like as if Facebook users had moved to Mastodon, you know? That type of vibe Mastodon gives me, when I scroll my feed on here.
It's no wonder Bluesky is becoming the number #1 best alternative to Twitter, *because it was created with mind to be an alternative to Twitter*. No wonder people are saying that Bluesky LOOKS and FEELS like twitter.
See? See where am I going with that?
But Mastodon? But what about Mastodon?
Mastodon = is an old, good Facebook that Facebook used to be. Mastodon doesn't gives me vibes or a feel that I use Twitter......unless I use former Twitter app that is now remade to be for Mastodon (like @MonaApp / @ivory ) app. Yes, using an app like that does gives me Twitter vibes - just sharing that personally at least what I feel like.
BUT, even then, Mastodon still feels like Facebook. I'm sorry, but that's the way things are. At least on my side and the feed that I have.
Mastodon has its own ecosystem. Mastodon has its own world.
And that world is DIFFERENT then old Twitter's or Bluesky's.
Bluesky did managed to recreate Twitter's world perfectly which I miss.
Congrats to Bluesky and I'm sorry for your loss, Mastodon - for loss in being a good competetitor to Twitter. There are still small chances for Mastodon to win, though, BUT ONLY if people are going to use Mastodon through apps for Mastodon that will give them old Twitter vibes. For Apple users, I think it's Mona and Ivory. Just because these apps used to be Twitter apps before.
Mastodon has else issues though, I must say. It's about blocking domains/defederating from some Fediverse instances.
You see, I've been watching for an year and a half and still, how do people on here are abusing defederation. A good example of it is mastodon.art .
I've also seen other people promoting to block that or that Mastodon server/Mastodon user, just because they don't agree with what that user/Mastodon server's community says/its opinions.
Honestly, personally, I dislike such approach. If you want to defederate, just defederate from a user/Mastodon server that is a spam, or a scam, or violates any normal human being's rules taht are accepted widely and globally everywhere. But don't abuse that tool, please!
As for now, I am mainly active on Bluesky - https://expertplus.creator.blue , if anyone wants to follow meover there or as @expertplus.creator.blue (make sure to follow @bsky.brid.gy so that you and I would be to interact with each other), because that's where most of my Twitter followings are, and that's where I have a good amount of audience (252 followers), although I must say, on Mastodon I have the best engagement, while on Bluesky, uh, I mainly have zero engagement, feels like nobody sees my posts when I post there.
I'm not leaving Mastodon, of course no, but I've sen some people I know, who were wondering about me being inactive on Mastodon, so that's why did I wrote this whole thing.
If you've made it this far to the end of my post, thank you for reading it and have a good day :-)
P.S. I daily check my Mastodon notifications, so, don't worry, I am still active on here, although I post rarely on here now. But feel free to reach out to me :-)

Let your creative friends know, Threads (and #Twitter / X of course) are not the solution.
A stern reminder that all centralised social media platforms are owned by fickle billionaires that enforce arbitrary rules whenever they feel like it.
It's not a corporation. It's not a board of suits. It's just one individual that tolerates your existence for as long as you hold some kind of value. They can use you and ban you how and when they want.
Decentralised networks are the future.

Exploiting Meta’s Weaknesses, Deceptive #Political Ads Thrived on #Facebook and #Instagram in Run-Up to #election2024

Despite Meta's stated commitment to crack down on harmful content, it failed to catch tens of thousands of ads that used false claims and deepfakes of political figures to collect users’ sensitive personal data or bait them into monthly charges.

Deleting #Facebook is intentionally difficult; those wanting to delete will find that they are led through a maze of menu options. This webpage has a link that will take you directly to the deletion page if you are logged into your Facebook account on a PC. Perhaps the best thing you can do is post this link to your Facebook account a week before deleting it to help others learn about this fast and easy shortcut.
The 33 state attorneys general who are suing Meta for deceptive and unlawful practices make a lot of interesting points in their 233-page complaint (PDF link in page):
Ed Zitron is really on fire preaching against the general malaise we're all feeling from the Rot Economy and the enshittification of everything, like this recent post:
LOL: After #Facebook/#Meta allowed to call #LGBT people mentally ill (WHY?), some LGBT employees took that literally and took sick leave for "mental illness".
Absolutely deserved. I wouldn't work for this garbage company in the first place (it's the worst data leech), but I approve of this #MaliciousCompliance 100%.
