The interior of the Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, photographed in near-darkness save for a dramatic shaft of sunlight streaming from a high window and falling diagonally across the elaborately painted wall murals. A tall arched window with a fanlight dominates the centre of the image, flanked by richly painted panels depicting allegorical and maritime scenes. A dark wooden bench with a red cushioned seat stands alone on the black and white marble chequerboard floor below. The overall atmosphere is deeply atmospheric and reminiscent of old master painting.
