Dagon was the father of the gods in ancient Syria, as well as a god of fertility, prosperity, and kingship. Because his name sounds similar to the Hebrew word for "fish," Dagon is mistakenly called a sea god in medieval texts, and gets reinvented as a fish-like demon.
